Two cockatiels: Sharlett (Cinnamon Pied) and Data (White-Faced Pied)
Sharlett flew onto the roof, and thankfully flew into the yard so I could scoop her up and bring her back inside to safety. Data only few a couple of feet so he was easier to catch but I was terrified. This happened a couple of weeks ago and made us realize we probably shouldn't take them outside anymore. It's too dangerous and if anything happened to them, I would never forgive myself.

We are taking them to get their talons trimmed and wings clipped tomorrow. If only so I do not have a heart attack when Sharlett or Data get startled and fly off when we have the ceiling fans on. They are such a joy to me and I'd be lost without them. Thankfully they are happy and healthy; Miss Sharlett even started talking! She's not as much of a talkative little bird as Data but that's okay. She's got a cute little voice too!

Data is learning new phrases, and noticed when I was anxious. He told me "it's alright, it's alright." They are such a joy and I am infinitly greatful to have them in my life! They have helped me to decide that I want to be in animal-assisted therapy for young children!

In other news, Data is a very jealous little bird. He and I are extremely close and he sometimes gets a little jealous of Sharlett since I hold them both at the same time. I don't know if he will let me rescue any other parrots. I don't want him to be sad or scared that I won't love him. I'll have to talk him into it, lol.

I've been really distracted recently so I am sorry about my lack of posting. I lose track of time quite easily and before I know it, a month had gone by! I will be starting college courses again soon!

I will never disagree with erring on the side of safety. Every case is different. Good luck!

It's true. I wouldn't want anything to happen to these precious angels!

As fulfilling as an outside experience is for our birds, tragic accidents can and do happen. Not just their flight ability, but the skies in *some* areas is filled with raptors - with eagle-eye vision and the ability to zoom in quickly. The only outdoor experience mine get is in a sturdy cage that cannot be opened from the inside!

Please be *very careful* with birds and ceiling fans! While some are terrified by the whirling blades, others may panic-fly and get injured or worse. In my opinion, there is *no* concept of safety when a ceiling fan is operating!

I have my ceiling fans modified in the entire house so nobody can ever turn them on by accident because the cord you have to pull to turn the blade on simply no longer exists (I made it too short to be accessible).... so only the light on the fan ever comes on. I have an AC unit and I use that instead... no excuse to ever have a fan on when you have birds IMO. This apples to clipped birds as well... Rascal could get plenty of height even when he was clipped not long after he was clipped! Escpecially when he spooked and put forth more effort in trying to fly.

... and living in horridly hot, humid, muggy nasty swamp pit that is Florida filled with GIANT cockroaches that would eat you alive if you let them (I cannot wait to get out of this swamp)... if I, as poor as I am, can be without a fan anyone can :p :58: haha
