SassyByrd (DYH Amazon) JoJo (GCC) Betty (GCC) DEARLY LOVED fids lost to “Teflon Disaster 12/17 RIP Pickles (GC),RIP Winston (Sun), RIP Lady PLEASE TAKE 5 MINUTES &TOSS OUT ALL YOUR TEFLON NOW!
SassyByrd has got to be the most vocal creature (fur, feathered, or human) I have ever known. Thank goodness she doesn’t scream very much, but she never quits making noise. Never. Seriously. It’s usually a combination of words, phrases, beeps, honking, whistles, really you name it. For those of you who have ever had guinea hens, she also imitates them at 10X the volume. This has gotta be the absolute worst sound for a parrot to learn. I can handle the clucking and crowing of the chicken imitations, but guinea hens?

I personally don’t mind all the noise. She seems to love the sound of her own voice. But it can drive my husband crazy, especially when we are *trying* to watch TV! He has started yelling at her (which she finds hilarious) and I’m starting to feel like I have 2 two year olds. I realize things could be much worse and there is no getting around this, I’m just venting to other fidents who can relate!

I feel your pain...I have 2 suns and one of them constantly squawks, talks, mutters and beeps (starts when the cover comes off in the morning and stops when it goes on at bedtime). I can’t even imagine a parrot imitating guineas - I almost spit out my Diet Coke when I read that!!! My husband also gets annoyed by the racket at times - if you ever find a way around it, I hope you’ll share :)

My grey is like that. Constant chatter, noises, whistles, sound effects, you name it. Only he's really like a 2 year old since he picked up my 2 year old nephews crying and whining. That is the one noise I can't stand and I'll tell him to be quiet and use his words! Then he'll usually tell me no...

Tell hubby that yelling at your Amazon is probably the WORST thing he could do, as he is providing entertaining feed back to her, reinforcing the noise making. When our Salty goes on a screaming jag, we will either sing to him his favorite song ( Little Brown Jug) and he stops and joins in, or offer a different sound that he makes which is more pleasing to the ear ( in his case its whistling any tune).

But sometimes ya gotta just let her scream herself out. Parrots, Amazons in particular, yell and scream at certain points of the day, and sometimes just for the sheer delight in being alive and a bird!

Try whispering. If you talk really low to them, they have to stop to hear you. Sometimes it breaks the screaming fit and they quiet down a bit.

That too, Anita. Anything to break their concentration can be effective.

Thanks everyone for the sympathy! Wrench & Anita, Sass doesn’t really ever scream much, and she’s not particularly loud. She just talks nonstop. We have a business at home with employees and she, as head supervisor, is out with us all day. The only time she tends to get really loud is when we are trying to have a serious discussion or on the phone. The *complaint* was more that she is just a general jabber jaw, which I (secretly) adore. It’s more my hubby who has the complaints as she continues her jabbering during “his” downtime. But I don’t think he would even question who would go first, so he grudgingly puts up with it. SassyByrd is my forever toddler, and all the world knows this.

I guess I'm lucky with Amy...He never really did any "Amazon" type screaming..but at certain times of the day (as Al pointed out) He can get LOUD,but its always in words/phrases and can last ten minutes or more. I find it entertaining and encourage him to go on lol. At my old house, during the summer when the windows were open ( I lived on the corner of a main street and kids would cut thru my yard  ) Amy would go into one of his talking sessions ( He got excited seeing kids cut through) And the kids would bolt up,look all around and pick up the pace lol.

My moms older wild caught female DYH amazon is a constant vocalizer. NOT screams, very pleasant almost melodic vocalizations she makes all day long. While he was alive, her male GCA made very little noise. My male BFA is also a quiet guy. Wonder if it has to do with females being more chatty than males? Or a DYH thing? I wouldn’t mind Kiwi “talking” more actually, as long as it wasn’t screeching.

Callum is constantly muttering or talking. If he's really in the "zone" he'll start beatboxing. Very interesting thing to hear and see a little GCC go up and down his rope perch, beatboxing and headbobbing. I don't mind it. Callum really only screams when he's been cooped up, but he also does know a "quiet" command. Then he gets kisses and head scratches when he's quiet.
