The Continuing Capers of Companion-ing Cotton

Brave Little birdie, round 2!
Little Cottonoid bird came out of his cage again today!!!

I am ecstatic! As his last venture out resulted in several late evening hours of increasingly worried attempts to get back in.

He also went back inside!! At dinner time! YAY!

Chit chat about my favorite parrot shop and 💲
I spent a lot of money this morning at the parrot store. An amount that exceeds what I've spent on enrichment across my dogs' entire lives! I spent at least 45 minutes talking to the owner; I just can't adore enough how passionate he is about improving parrot lives. I try to wait until there aren't more people in the store, but one gentleman (a seemingly well known customer) came in after I did. When I thanked him for his time waiting, both he and the store owner emphatically said they will always make time for and appreciate anyone who gives a bird in need a new home. 🥰

I bought a couple cage bar platform thingies to mount on the outside of the cage and aid Cotton getting in and out - and it worked! 🏆

I also bought more balsa kabobs as he destroyed one in 2 days, that was sitting on top of the cage in a location he had to climb to, so he was serious about getting it!

Then duplicates of his favorite perches (that he can shred bark from) so I can swap them out for cleaning/disinfecting. And some different styles of shredding toys.

And two different types of plastic foraging puzzles.

And a duplicate of his favorite paper toy.

Ay yi yi.

I know these aren't highly repetitive costs; once he's more comfortable with me it will be a lot easier to offer mental enrichment outside the cage. I was getting very self conscious about it with myself in the car on the way home, partly because my pay does not support this extravagance long term, but Buster left me a very nice cushion of pet budget cash and Cotton deserves to reap that reward :)

Maynard thinks she does, too, so she got a new squirrel squeaky toy.

Is he afraid of hands? Have you tried to get him to step up yet?

Terrified of hands and people in general, including me - he was tolerant of me messing around inside his cage until I had to take him to the vet, but we're getting close to trust again.

Once he's calm with me right next to him again we'll work on going to a target perch I think.

Is this a common thing with IRN's to be afraid of hands?

From what I've read and heard, yes, for most of the ringneck species. A very simple explanation is that they are from regions with the highest number of natural predators (including snakes=hands) so they are potentially always going to be on alert to animals they don't know and trust. They are known for becoming "untame" more easily than other species.

That's all passed on from other ringneck owners or vet-adjacent conversations though.

Cotton himself likely came from the parrot equivalent of a puppy mill through a local store that hand feeds early weaned birds, so it's not really a surprise he seems to be a chronic plucker with no history of bonding in his near 2 years of life.

I know in my heart he'd be happiest in an aviary with other Ringnecks - I played a video today of baby IRN and he was so excited and talked to then for 30 minutes! But his infection makes him ineligible and there aren't any local anyway. I did find his untame ARN doppleganger in Tennessee though ;) so there are placements out there. For now he's stuck with me, and everything I can do to make his environment better, and my heart that is completely smitten even when he's not yet convinced :)

One of the reasons I wasn't planning to adopt a bird until summer is that I'd been waiting on window replacement (ordered early last year and expected to arrive in the US in March 2022) - naturally they called yesterday and can start installation Monday. Nope! We'll reschedule for later in the summer when I can get Cotton outside.
.

The other reason is that I'm traveling this week for work, for the first time ever in this career. My son is staying at the house and Cotton seemed indifferent to him, not too scared, so I hope things go ok. I'm on a plane and have already checked the Cotton Cam a few times 😂

I'm home from my trip! I was in Honduras and woke up every morning to all the birds singing! It was glorious! I didn't see any parrots but one of their birds makes a sound just like a ringneck alarm call so that made me smile :) Their national bird is the scarlet macaw so lots of goods at airport stores had hand painted macaws :)

Cotton did great with my son - ate his meals right away and was very active and chatty every day. I had spotty WiFi but still managed to check the Cotton Cam a couple times daily 😄

I offered a millet bribe this morning and now he's happily beak grinding and staring at me.

He's kept up his antibiotic and the right nare looks great! He still has staining on the left side but I think his eyes still look clear.

I'm not going to mention the little green feather on his chest, lest he overhear and remedy the situation ;)

Sounds like a nice place to go. Welcome home

Ok. I'm new here but what a cutie!

Thank you both!

Yesterday Cotton was talking off and on pretty much all day! I think he is happy to see me even though he's walking away from me when I approach to change his food and water ;)

My dog is very happy she's had a friend to boss around and she'll be very sad when my son leaves today!

I'm not sure I want the alarm calling to become part of every day conversation, that's for sure 😄
