Talk someone out of getting a large macaw?
Well, after living with one for just a week, here are the downsides:
•*Unbelievably loud
•*Unbelievably messy
•*Takes up a lot of space with cage and toys
•*Forget having a “neat” house
•*Missing pieces of wood furniture or curtains
•*That IMPOSING and MENACING big beak (expect to be bitten)
•*YOU will not necessarily be his or her favourite person
•*High maintenance pet
•*Requires many hours of interaction EVERY day
•*Expensive: Vet, food, toys
•*Requires lifelong, unconditional commitment
The upsides:
Highly intelligent, highly interactive and IMO, one of the most beautiful creatures on earth!
For me, the upsides FAR outweigh the downsides —*but none of the “downsides” came to me as a surprise. I expected those from the outset.
My advice: Do your research, talk to a lot of owners and KNOW what you are getting into. Don’t rush the decision. If after weighing the good AND the bad, you still want a Big MAC...then, go for it and don’t look back.
