The family recently got a steamer for clothes and didnt tell me. They just unboxed it today and nobody is allowed to use it until I'm sure its safe. It's a steam buddy steamer.

Hmm well the reviews don't look too good.. if anyone can tell us if this is good or recommend a (relatively affordable) steamer, that would be great! I would like to get one too :).

If all it releases is steam, it's perfectly safe to use. I use a steam cleaner to clean River's cage and around the house. I use this one it has various attachment, scrubber (works good for the grate), a cloth pocket that wipes down everything cage, perches, etc. It also has a garment freshener attachment.

Ooh that looks awesome!! What else can steam cleaners be used to clean? (I want this to appeal to my mom for around-the-house use, not just bird cage use :D)

I have been using mine all over the house. Bathroom, kitchen, freshened the chairs/couch/pillows. It's awesome! :)

Awesome thanks :D! I asked my mom about it and she said she was looking at the Shark products (not sure if she saw it on the website or not) and she said that she could buy a mop and get a free steamer. And I asked her how much the mop was and she said "$140? $150?" And I was like "Well do you really want to buy a $50 mop?" :p lol! So we'll see, maybe I'll be able to convince her to buy a steamer. I could use it to clean my carpet!! Got lots of beautiful earthy red-brown tones in it (thanks, birdies..) :D.

I'm gonna buy the steam mop after Christmas to clean bathroom/kitchen floors. Its has an attachment to go over rugs too.

Here is the steamer that I use. I got it from Walmart.com a few weeks ago. It's a great machine and better than my old one. It will also clean grout like no bodies business among other things. It is a tad loud so my birds don't like it when I'm using it. So they either have to go to another room or outside.

It's like $37.99 from Walmart.com and 97cents shipping to your home.

All it emits is steam because you can only put water in it. I was only planning on using it on the occasional dress shirt/pants or to disinfect. Just to be safe should I still only use it in the patio room?

Oh.. well why didn't I think of that lol :p. Of course if it's by Shark it'll have some awesome new fancy innovation :D. Maybe we'll buy the mop after all . I'll ask my mum.

Ooh that looks like a good one too! Do you clean cages with it?

Do steamers just disinfect? Or will they also clean up dirt and poop? Will I still have to scrub my cages?

As long as they aren't close enough to get burned, it's ok to use in the same room. When I steam River's cage, I put him either in his little porch/travel cage or he just hangs out on my hubby.

They clean the poop great! I take the grate out and set it in the tub to steam so all the poop the falls off can be rinsed down the drain. Then I use the cloth part to go over the rest of the cage and perches, the poop just wipes off.

I'm going shopping this weekend if they work that well!

Okay I never even thought of using it to disinfect the cage. Would it be useful for perches?

Yep, I run mine right over the perches while they are still in the cage. Cleans them right off.

Okay so it's completely safe?(smell wise)There was some complaints over a burning plastic smell but I only smelled it on the first use(it didn't really smell like plastic just a new smell when the steam came out). Now it just smells like water vapor if you can imagine what that smells like.

Oh that's so cool! How exactly does a steamer work?? Is the tub you're talking about a bath tub or is it part of the steamer? I'm so confused now lol :D!

Suncon, so sorry I jacked your thread .

You didn't;) The information people were giving due to your replies were useful to me too!

Oh good :) I felt bad, I asked a completely different question and I wasn't sure if you were even interested in getting a new steamer lol! But I'm glad it was helpful :).

The tub I'm talking about is the bathtub. The steamer works by you fill the chamber with distilled water, and plug it in. It heats the water into steam when you pull the button. :)
