Do your macaws quietly and repeatedly just squawk themselves to sleep? LOL . It's not loud at all. Just quietly grunting nonstop to himself. Quite cute, really.

My Patagonian does it... it often erupts into loud screeches, chat, or singing, but then quiets down into "bedtime squawks" until at last he goes to sleep.

Your bird is adorable!

Yup. Clearly fairly common across the spectrum of species. Likely a form of contact call or something like beak grinding as a comforting tool prior to sleep.
Beautiful Blue and Gold!

Syd's last communication to me as I covered him up used to be 'I'm sorry' in a really plaintive voice. A couple of days ago that changed to 'kisses'. I sing him Baa Ba black sheep first which makes him go into a feather ball and position himself on his favourite sleep perch, but sometimes I hesitate before closing his door and he then goes into a whole conversation with himself.
My grandson used to do the same thing when little, practising words, I think Syd does the same going over his day until he settles down. It's soooo cute.

The other day, I took him up his gym that's in my room and I ended up falling asleep to him grunting. He and I fell asleep for a good hour or so LOL . He seems to only do it when he's falling asleep outside of his cage. When we put him in his cage for a nap or bedtime, he doesn't make a peep.
