Sprouts smelling like vinegar, toss?

I have a batch of sprouts that has started to smell of vinegar. I assume this is bad and they need to be tossed?

I rinse every couple days once they've sprouted and store them in the fridge. During storage, I let them sit upside down to let them drain all standing water before returning to the fridge.

Hi yes I wouldnt risk it. BTW do you use GSE Grapefruit Seed Extract when you rinse your sprouts? Any time whilst storing your sprouts you can sniff them to ensure they are still ok but if they smell off, add some GSE and let soak for few minutes. Then rinse and drain repeatedly and sniff again. If still rank, toss them. You can place your jars to drain in the fridge in a plastic box. Each jar will still need to be rinsed and drained each day and returned to the fridge.

Yes, Chris, definitely chuck them if they smell sour.

I use a few drops of lemon juice in my original overnight soak, and IME it helps the sprouts last a little bit longer.

The sprout people say that sprouts can be kept for up to 6 weeks refrigerated. This batch lasted only a week, so I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong. They dont sit in water. They are stored in Tupperware in the fridge.

Maybe I'll try leaving the lid cracked, AND continue to rinse daily (once sprouted and in the fridge, I rinse maybe once every other day or so).

Hi, 6 weeks is a bit much and surely the point of sprouting is to achieve the very best nutrition possible for your birds? I don't think you are doing anything wrong and would aim to use them up in a week of being kept in their jars and rinsed at least once a day. The usage rate for GSE is 9/10 drops per liter btw. Maybe smaller quantities soaked and sprouted more regularly would work better for you and your bird?

I was just thinking the same thing. I always did small batches, and fed here and there. Now I'm making them about half his diet, so tried a larger batch I can store. I think I need to find a happy medium.

Six weeks is a stretch! FIY, in salad bars, sprouts are a common source of food poisoning!
