sprouting

I have never tried sprouting before but looked at some videos and in all my videos the seeds/mix seems to sink to bottom of jar. I tried last night and most of my seeds are floating to the top. is that normal? or does it mean that the seed is empty/no embryo?

When I sprout, everything sinks to the bottom except the sunflower seeds...those float. I don't think this has anything to do with the "sproutability" of the seeds, it's the density of the material vs. water....but I could be wrong. See how this batch goes through the whole process.

D128 Are you using seeds that are intended to sprout? I get my seeds from Avain Naturals for sprouting. Rosie never ate any sprouts until I sprouted their seeds. I was instructed in a Phoenix Landing nutrition course that by the time you get the sprouts in the grocery store they are not suitable for birds due to the mold factor. Because of this I will not eat them from a store.
It is fun and easy and so good for our flocks.

I'm not sure to be honest. I buy it from the breeder that I bought the bird from..It's a mix..what's a good affordable place to buy food from? online that is..

We get our sprout mix from our breeder, too, so I'm not sure about getting it online.

I tried sprouting some birdseed a few days ago but when I got to the morning of day 3 my seeds already had two spots of fuzzy mold so I chucked the whole batch. Guess I need to find better quality seeds, any ideas?

In the initial soaking of the seeds place a few drops of GSE and you should not get mold. You need to be careful to start with seeds specifically for sprouting. I get them at avain natural web site.

so most of the beans did sprout, but the actual bean part is still really hard and the bird wants nothing to do with them....how long should the "tail" be before i feed them? 1/2 "??

The bean part will not get any softer. Personally, I would only use organic sprouting seeds because you will be sure of what you are working for. It took several tries for Rosie to eat sprouts. Even now she has to be "in the mood". At the PL classes on nutrition I learned that if you soak any seed overnight it will be more nutritious the next day. Please do not ask my why right now but it is in my notes. Look forward to meeting you Sat. at the PL class.

Once the seed or bean has sprouted the tail you can feed. If you put them into the sunlight at that point they will grow a green leaf.

We go through so many sprouts that we have 2 sprouters so one can be "working" at all times. Ruby's favorite food in the world is sprouts, when she was a baby at the breeder's, she used to sneak into the "sprouting room" and steal sprouts. She eats everything but the husk. It take a bit to get the hang of it, but making your own sprouts is well worth the effort.

I tried to sprout the bean mix before and it didn't work out very well. Personally, I used less beans and more seeds in the sprout mix. Garbanzo, mung & adzuki beans make nice additions to the seed mixes. I also like to add some lentils because I believe they add an interesting texture to the sprouts. I read that the fuzzy white mold is not dangerous to people or birds. It is the black mold that is harmful. Regular rinsing seems to keep the white fuzzy mold in check but it no longer alarms us when it does show up; we give the sprouts a good rinsing and then let them dry and the white fuzz generally doesn't come back again.

Give it a try! There are also economic advantages to sprouting seeds for your birds as well. If you weigh the seeds before you sprout them and then again after the seeds have sprouted you will see that your role as a micro farmer will pay off.
