Sprouting Mung Beans

I just went to the health food store and got some mung beans for the birds. I want to sprout them but I'm looking for some tips. I've tried spouting my regular seed mix in the past without much luck. any good advice, I've never even seen mung beans before so I want to make sure I do this right.

Forgot to say I use GSE not the vinegar, cheaper in the long run and works better if u ask me but I do all the other stuff.

Mung bean sprouts are the same as "bean sprouts" that you find in Chinese food, the thick white sprout which you can also buy in the produce section in the market.

How I do sprouts is, I soak the seeds in a cup of water overnight. The next morning, I drain the seeds and put them in a jar with a screen lid, rinse the seeds twice a day, morning and evening. Set the jar upside down so that they can drain but still get air. Doing this twice a day will produce beautiful sprouts, usually within a week.

Yeah , they're not much trouble and good for the fids. i have some good links if you 'd like them.We sprouts those and seeds both. If you get on a regular schedule it's not a whole lot of work.

I always use sprouted food for my birds... I find the mung bean the easiest to sprout... and it's different from the 'bean sprout' used in chinese food... lol

Sorry lene, but the bean sprout used in Chinese food is a "mung" bean sprout, just more developed.

Now I have another question....

How would I go about growing some? Is it a good idea to try or should I just keep buying them to sprout? These were from organic mung beans I got at the health food store and it just hit me, since I'm already sprouting them, wouldn't it make sense to plant some and just keep growing my own rather than keep going back to buy them? I'm just not very plant savvy so I'm not sure if it's actually a good idea or even how to do it, do I just stick the sprouts in some potting soil?

I have never tried to grow plants from the sprouts. For me I know I can't grow enough to feed everyone and would be to much work for me to try to grow a ton. It can't hurt to try but don't know how much 1 plant would give u and how long it would take? And for me I don't have a green thumb so sprouts is as far as I will go! lol! Good luck if u try it!

At the Phoenix Landing class I recently went to the vet said she stopped sprouting and would never suggest to her patients to sprount either at home or from a store. The reason is that the risk for contamination is greater than the reward. One tip is to use GSE in the initial soaking of the seeds.
