Levi - 6 yr old CAG

DOH-4/2/2016
Hi Everyone,

Quick question -
There are times when Levi hears sounds and immediately starts to shake his head. Like a quick flick, but he’ll do it several times. I’m interpreting it as he’s shaking the sounds out of his head b/c he doesn’t like it. Or it’s bothering him in some way. So, I’ll turn off the sounds & he stops.

What are your thoughts?

The Rb does that when he's annoyed. By sounds or appearances of his rival, or if he sees the broom come out. Sometimes the head-shake signals some yelling or flap-attacks...

About the broom... in the early days, he would sometimes perch in such high places in a vaulted ceiling/windows and would not come down, even for a chile if he had already had one or two that day. So I would wave the broom at him (still a good 10-15 feet short of his perch, but enough to annoy him to fly away, eventually landing someplace I could chase or corral him. We don't have that ceiling any more, but showing him the broom gets his attention, still, and annoys hm, and he shakes his head.

Okay, thanks Gail. I've only seen him do it with sounds, but I'll keep an eye out to see if he does it w/ other things as well.

Appreciate your response.

Keep track of the sound level and pitch. Some sounds will cause a response that signals that they may dislike it for any number of reasons.

Its part of learning the body language of your Parrot.

Yes, I will. Thanks :)

Very interesting! Like Sailboat mentioned, part of their language! Baby will even shake his head at weird sounds I make, some he will chirp at...others he shakes his head at!

Lol I recall when I was in high school and it was hot in my mom’s room so she wanted to sleep in mine. She snores like an elephant... well my budgie at the time (Jaide, may she rest in peace, lived a good 10 years) hated the sound. She got so annoyed, she’d flick her head around just how you described every time my mom let out a snore. Eventually she got so upset and irritable she started attacking my other budgie any time he got near. Poor birds. At least I had the luxury of earplugs. Lol. But yeah I’d take that head flick as a sign of annoyance just based off of Jaide’s experience with my mom’s snoring. As the other bird parents are saying similar things as well, I’d be willing to bet a bird that does that type of head flick is simply annoyed.

Ha, AkridChaos that's funny. :D

Okay, thank you, smbrds. :smile049: :)
