Some Common Abbreviations

Parrot Acronyms/Abbreviations: Part 3

This is a continuation from Parrot Acronyms/Abbreviations: Part 2

What we tend to refer to as parrot acronyms or abbreviations are really take-offs from alphabetic (Alpha) codes used by ornithological programs. There are, however, inconsistencies in the rules governing the alpha codes; with some lists not including all species.

Re: Parrot Acronyms/Abbreviations: Part 1

I have some 300Gigs+ of parrot information, including images of injuries & sick birds, along with sounds, but because of the forum's posting limitations getting some of it up is a bit difficult.

Most of what I have is other than anecdotal or hypothetical and some is more technical than a lot of us wish to read.

Re: Parrot Acronyms/Abbreviations: Part 1

Even if you can't put all the information into one post, it would be great if all the information was in one thread. That way, it would be together!

And my oh my! This is probably the most extensive abbreviation list that I've seen!

Re: Parrot Acronyms/Abbreviations: Part 1

Why do people refer to their parrots as fids?

Re: Parrot Acronyms/Abbreviations: Part 1

FIDS - Feathered/Furred Kids

There's also FRATS, FILDREN, PARRONT and I think I'm missing one...

I own a "my-turd" ;)

weco, I suppose people would still have to copy from the other threads, so figured it would be easier if it was all in one thread.

We were discussing on a thread about the misconception of budgies and American slang term parakeet. I thought we could make a abbreviation of parakeet/budgie so it could clear up a lot of misconceptions. 3 TIMES have I givin a member wrong information because I thought she was using the budgie, not the parakeet family. I thought about B2E, B stands for budgie , 2 stands because we usually get 2 of the species for company, E because it ends in E. Is there a chance ?

Arbitrarily creating our own acronyms may end up confusing us & anybody trying to figure out what we're trying to convey.....

What we tend to refer to as parrot acronyms/abbreviations are really take-offs from alphabetic (Alpha) codes used by ornithological programs. There are, however, inconsistencies in the rules governing the alpha codes; with some lists not including all species.

In case you didn't know, a while back I posted two pages of known/accepted acronyms under: Parrot Acronyms/Abbreviations: Part 1 & Parrot Acronyms/Abbreviations: Part 2

I guess BHP is a stretch, I have only heard that name a few times. Thanks for checking though :green2:

BE2 - Bare-Eyed Cockatoo
BFA - Blue Front Amazon

^^^^^^

That is what I want .. thanks for posting such a helpful thread ;)

Best regards

You're welcome.....I see you're looking around...there's a lot of information in the archives, but too often people would rather post questions rather than take a bit of time to see if their answer is not already there.....

Maybe it's just their way of demanding personal attention.....

Soooo....would a Tucuman amazon be TA?? Or how about TAZ?? TAZ seems more fitting with his mood swings lol

so what would be the abbreviation for a Cuban Amazon? CA? CZ? C-Zon? CUB?

There's no ornithological 3-letter code designation for a Cuban Amazon parrot, but if you use Alfa codes under International Organization for Standardization (ISO) iso3166 alfa-2, you come up with CUA, the CU standing for Cuba & the A for Amazon & if you want to use alfa-3 standards, it would be CUBA, which would be a understandable misnomer.....

Since the first publication of ISO standards back in 1974, we have seen more and more notations of things being included under the ISO designation, so,if you wanted to petition the organization for recognition of the Cuban Amazon, that's probably what you would get.....

In our house we have our own abbreviations for Hahnzel such as, LG- little guy, SLG- stinky little guy, and of course RSG- really stinky guy, which is usually used just before a "time out".

Ha ha, wondered what all that was about when I was reading through the posts. Anyway I know now I have a BFA : )

Actually, I found that an abbreviation of AT had been proposed, apparently for its Latin spelling, back in 2008, but I could not find where it had ever been accepted and published.....

I had the opportunity to sit in on an ornithological society meeting a good number of years ago.....definitely too stuffy for me...you almost had the feeling that they had written Robert's Rules Of Order.....they sure are not given to doing anything in a hurry.....
