Amazon Blue Crowned Conure
I am a new bird mamma. Just got Merlin home tonight. He is around 7 is a guess from rescuer. He is so sweet. I already adore him. I don't want to push him so I was just thinking since it's so long of a day in commute that I would let him rest tonight and work with him tomorrow. He crawled all over his new cage and started eating right away I covered him for night and he is quiet. Any advice on having the training time. Is a bird like a dog...... can't train an old bird new tricks? He's far from old but he was previously in a rescue situation 3/2024 and I just don't want to push him but am anxious to build a relationship with him. Any advice is appreciated!

Welcome and be welcomed. First, Amazons and Conures are 2 different species, so maybe a picture of his will help clear up any confusion. Second 7 yrs is young for either, Amazons can lve for 50-60 yrs and conures to 30 or more. So 7 yrs is a young adult, in full prime of life! Third, and most important, parrots are 100% not like dogs, please get that out of your mind. Training parrots is so much more of a cooperative thing then with dogs. Parrots do 100% not react well to punitive or punishment type stuff. They are far too smart and have excellent memories. Let Merlin be for a few days until he settles in, some birds do so in a few days, some take longer. Find out what his favorite treat is, and that becomes your training tool.

Strongly suggest that you read the stickies at the top of the Amazon subforum, even if he is a conure. The "Body Language" one is more Amazon oriented, but the "I Love Amazons" one has tons of great info applicable to all parrots.
