Cypress (teal) and Citrine (green) - male american budgies, 7 months.
I had to go to work yesterday and leave my new baby alone in her cage for the first time. I was monitoring with a baby camera.
At some point she climbed the chain on her swing and I guess the links were just a little too big, because she got her foot caught.
I'm at the vet waiting for them to finish x Ray's and I am SO SCARED.

I only had her three days and I broke her!!
I did so much research about everything, I tried to be so careful..
I fussed over what toys to put in there forever, and I was not originally going to use this swing, but found with clipped wings she had trouble getting on the first one. I switched this out to see if she could reach it better and she loved it, so I left it. She had no trouble with it while we were home all weekend.
***k.

I'm a horrible bird mom.
If anything happens to her how can I face her breeder.. how can I stand losing such a sweet perfect bird.

God damnit.

OMG ! I am so sorry for you and your new baby. I can imagine how you are feeling. You did your absolute best with everything, and you are not a terrible Mum. I have just spotted a link on a chain not quite closed. These things happen, just so very unfortunate.
I pray your baby makes a good recovery. xx

Oh thank goodness, they just told me nothing is broken.
Now I just gotta worry about the effects of the sedation and keep her from hurting herself more with a bandaged leg..
And hope it recovers fully..

I just had to put my dog down in december and somehow some part of me thought this bird would be easier on my heart. Now I'm here bawling my eyes out.

Ohhh, im so glad ok.
Completely understand why a good cry is in order!
Millit treats for baby, and human treats for you, and a hug!

Yeah I am so mad at myself for not being more careful with that toy. I read a million things about what to watch out for.
I'm going to take pictures of her set up tonight and ask for suggestions

It's hard to judge the safety of a toy.
Almost everything you can put in a cage for a bird to play with can cause an injury.

I am glad your baby is going to be ok.

On toys that hang from chains, you can wrap them with vet wrap so they can’t get their footsies in the links. I’m so glad your baby is ok.

And birds are no easier on the heart, I’m certain.

Welcome to the crazy bird parront family!

Dont be so hard on yourself, you havelearned a lesson and sounds like no one will be permanently harmed. Small parrots are hard to find wellmade safe toys, somuch is junk plastic.

Does anyone have any idea what to watch out for after an injury, regarding signs of a poor recovery?
I've reached out to the vet but I don't believe he is "board certified" .. we don't have one close. I've tried to reach out to a few a bit further away but I dont know if I will hear back since I'm not their client.

After getting back from the vet yesterday she seemed great.. still tried to get on her perches and messed with her toys a little, but I covered her cage to encourage some extra rest and set up a nearby ceramic heater to boost the warmth of the cage.
She slept on her boing a lot of the day, but ate a lot too. More than I ever saw her eat!

She slept on her boing most of the night as well, but sometime in the earlier am jumped/slipped off and slept on the floor for a bit..

Then this morning she did not eat much at all. I put on some budgie sounds and she trilled a bit.. and she flapped around the cage when she saw me..
But as we got closed to time for her medicine (noon) she seemed more and more lethargic?
She was sleeping in her food dish.. I picked her up, gave her the meds, and put her back on the cage floor.. she sat where I put her and did not move.
She is sleeping and not responding to my voice now.

Is she just tired from the wound or should I be really really worried now??
Ugh

Oh no, that is so scary! I am so glad you were able to watch her and help her out so quickly, and that she is going to be okay. Making mistakes with our babies can be so disheartening. When my chihuahua was a pup he got his nail caught on a blanket and wailed bloody murder so bad the neighbour came over and scolded me! He didn't realize my pup has anxiety and so things like this cause him to freak out far more than the average doggo.

Trust that you are always doing your best for your babe, and that you are a good bird mom! Many people would not have even thought to keep a baby camera on the bird (I sure would not have! That's brilliant - by the way!) So you are doing amazing!!!

Prayers for a speedy and easy recovery for your babe. And big hugs for you! Let the emotions flow, it's safe to cry here! :60:

Try reaching out to a local bird rescue - or any bird rescue. They tend to be more responsive and receptive. :)

... she didnt make it..
I feel so horrible. How can I only keep a bird alive for four days...

The vet says it was not my fault and it was not her leg.. that something was wrong with her before I got her..
But it doesn't make it better..

So sorry to hear of your loss. You tried your best and I'm sure in your baby's own way she knew it.

I’m so very sorry. I’m sure the vet is right, this wasn’t your fault. Birds are very good at hiding illness; by the time it becomes obvious, it’s usually too late. I know none of this makes it feel any better.

I am so sorry, that is such a painful thing to experience. I know it doesn't make it feel any better to know that it was not your fault, but I hope you find even a little peace in knowing you did your best <3 Sending you LD hugs to help you through this tough time. She is so lucky that she had a loving owner to care for her in her last four days
