A sun conure, budgie. Miss my cockatiel Sam. See you someday I hope Sam! And my little girl Sky a budgie that passed away in 2007 Thunder my budgie passed away too last September. Miss you little budd
I haven't been on in a bit because my sweet cockatiel Sam had to go to the vet hospital on Sunday. He is 11 yrs old, a normal gray, and has an enlarged heart and very enlarged liver. He's been in the hospital for the week. He has a wonderful avian vet that was a huge help and very caring about Sam.

I hope that he pulls though ok but he's very lethargic, and very tired out. I am sad because he is a shadow of his former self. He was always so energitic, playful. The vet says that he is an old bird for a cockatiel (past middle age) and probably won't survive another year.

Just need prayers for Sam.

ohhhhh, kentstar. It is sad, but excellent that you have a super vet taking care of Sam's needs. Prayers going out to you and Sam.

Thats very sad! :( Get well soon Sam!! Fingers crossed.

Sending my prayers for Sam!!! 11 doesn't seem that old, I have a friend that has one that is almost 20. So I am sure there is hope for Sam!!!

Thanks everyone! :)
Sam has a heart medication (Enaplopril 5 mg) and liver med ( milk thistle) that he has to take for the rest of his life. It makes him very, very sleepy and lethargic so far, but maybe some of that is just from the stress of being in the hospital and his illness. I hope that in a few weeks he will show some signs of the old Sam I knew.
I wouldn't want him to live this lethargic, sleepy life for the rest of his life. Poor birdie!

Thanks for the prayers again! He could use them now.

Poor Sam.... such a big illness for such a tiny creature
Hopefully the sleepiness is from stress and being away from his mommy.
Please God all that will change, when he returns home.
Be strong, we are all here for you

Constantly in my thoughts and prayers

Sometimes once a body gets more accustomed to a medication, the side effects diminish. I'd give Sam some time before deciding if things are going well or not. Poor little birdie!

Im so sorry for you! Ill pray for you and sam!
Hope he gets better, poor baby.

(P.S. 11 isnt that old. Ive heard the average lifespan of a cockatiel is 15 and they sometimes make it to 20)

I'm sorry. I hope he gets better soon. Don't listen to that doc if he's basing his life expectancy on age. If it is because of his health, that's one thing, but my cockatiel is 12 and my in-laws' tiel lived to be 18! Good luck. My parakeet died suddenly last week. She was also 12 and fine one day and on deaths door the next morning. So, I feel your pain. :0(

I've heard of several cockatiels living to 35 years in age, and one documentation listed the oldest known tiel at 36. My youngest (I think) is 11 years old, and the oldest is, at minimum, 14 years of age. I'm sure he's older, however, I have no way to find out just how much older he is. And then, I have two others, ages unknown, but suspected older birds.

So sorry to hear your tiel isn't feeling so well! The milk thistle should really help him feel better in a few days at least! Maybe even a couple of weeks as well as he takes it alright! I've given two of my birds milk thistle (for two different reasons), and I noticed an improvement in both.

aw, i didn't know they gave enalapril to birds. my dog had an enlarged heart and was on that. he was somewhat sleepy on it, but it did prolong his life. he is gone now, but was diagnosed with heart disease at 9 years old and made it to a few days shy of 14, feeling good most of the time, just a little tired.
i hope your little buddy feels better, and i'm glad he is with someone who loves him so much. :)
