Rio (Yellow sided conure) sadly no longer with us
So in looking for possible fids to share in an adventure with I've been suggested by multiple people pretty much every bird on the planet! I'm thinking of starting my search in September to give me time to sort myself out with work and home, and to build up some money for a more exotically priced bird if I become enamored.

I guess I'm looking for help trying to narrow my search radius. To give an idea I've been suggested by different people, both bird people and non-bird people to get; an African Grey, Eclectus, Pionus, Senegals, Caiques, Alexandrines, Kakarikis, Quakers, Pyyuhra conures, cockatiels (despite their conspiracy against me), Budgies and one suggestion I got for a lesser Vasa!

I'm trying to find a bird with a non-painful bite okay in an apartment, so I think a too is out of the question! I know I'm gonna get bit, I was just hoping for something less likely to rip me to shreds as I'm not the greatest with pain ruling out the sharp beaks like Eclectuses and I think they're too big anyway. My biggest experience was of course the green cheek conure but I'm not entirely convinced getting another one due to them being the same type of bird as Rio. Now a Green Cheek screech is probably the most I can handle noise wise, my neighbors knew he existed but they said to me they could barely hear him so he was never an issue for them.

I was kind of hoping temperament wise to find one with an almost cat-like temperament, by which I mean they come over when they want to but can do their own thing, but aren't going to go into attack mode if I come asking for a scritch. I'm always confused by the term "cuddle" with birds, do people actually hug them? Or does it just mean ones that want to show affection and like being handled all over?

My biggest worry is I work from 8 to 5 weekdays, aiming to go to the gym twice a week (not going so well) which gets me back home at about 7PM. Luckily I'm normally in on weekends so that's okay.

I'm just trying to narrow the choices down from the list above haha! There's some up there I know I'm not right for but I also know there's loads of different birds out there that I don't know of. I didn't know of may of them until this year!

Any help would be amazing!

The wife's Bongo is a cuddle bird! He will climb into her shirt, snuggle in the valley and sleep, or head stuck out the top and watch the world go by! My JoJo, not so much! Hangs with me, but gives me the 'back off dude' look if I try to give too many scritches! At the moment, he is sitting on the top of my head and- oh my, I just noticed the time! Good thing I have such a mellow job! Later!!

see Rio was in between Jojo (where did his name come from?) and Bongo. He never had much interest in climbing into clothing or burrowing under anything, but he loved to hang out and would play "snuggle bug" as the game was called, essentially I would cup my hand and he would lean into it and get a stroke from me. He would also shoot after me if I left the room but I could tell he was uncomfortable with a hand on his back to "grab him" which makes sense considering his time at the breeders. Such a shame he died as he was almost the perfect parrot, never aggressive, liked being with anyone, very clean, not once did he make a real mess and ultimately was a joy to be around

Parrotlets are good apartment birds. They don't need the giant cage that a bigger bird does (although bigger is always better) and they can't scream. Bumble is a bit of a Velcro bird but that's partly my doing - I haven't spent a ton of time training her to play outside her cage without me. I work full time and she seems pretty happy in her cage full of toys. They DO need to be handled daily because apparently they will become untame very quickly. They come in every color you can imagine - there's even a pied/marbled mutation that looks like somebody has splashed blue and green watercolors on a white background. They are very smart (Bumble learns new tricks with only a few repetitions) and their poop is TINY. So in case nobody has gone to this end of the spectrum in their recommendations, here you go!

If it's an independent bird who's likely to adapt well to being a good self entertainer and is happy to hang out but not be velcro to you 24/7, I can say that is the profile of the typical amazon. That said, it's hit or miss with the noise level depending on individual. Kiwi's done well in apartments, but some individuals can be on the noisy side. Pionus are closely related to amazons and often known as "amazon lite". To my understanding do not get as loud due to being physically smaller but still share many of the same desirable personality traits of their bigger cousins. I also hear they are a bit calmer personality, especially hormonally. I'd look into some of the pionus species in your search:)

I will definitely take your suggestion (mostly because I'm a bit enamored with the white caps!) and you definitely know what you're doing. I think a full on Amazon is a bit much for me now but having spent time around them recently in different situations it's some thing I'm considering for when I have bought my own home. They're laugh is the sweetest thing ever, they sound like super villains!

(Oops! Sorry, I meant to not click the post button...)

Noisier than suns? 😱😱😱

And also id imagine conures, cockatiels, and budgies are all good recommendations. But there could always be that unexpected bird that chooses you first :)

How about one of these?

https://www.beautyofbirds.com/patagonianconure.html

A friend has one and he is very independent and amuses himself well, makes a little noise when things are a bit different to normal and morning/evening. He still liked to have a cuddle and was affectionate.

Rickeybirds! Sorry Gail and RB, but you've really let the cat out of the bag on Patagonian behavior/antics/volume level:D

My alex sounds perfect, has a big beak but doesn't use it (anymore), very independant and happy to play alone in cage or outside, naturally is very loud but again doesn't use it often (couple mins in morning/evening). Allows handling all over but dislikes excessive petting. Though it would be a risk because if your alex vocalized more often than mine which is very possible, noise will def be a problem. Overall very sweet, quite, independant bird.

Annnnnnnnnnnnd... you said it, Inger, and Kiwi!
Mine is a screamng Meemie most of the day, with the temperament of Genghis Khan. Incredibly entertaining and a great mimic, though!

Triggs, old sport!
The wife and I, owners of the Rickeybird, would be willing to let him go for say 50 bucks. No, wait, I'll pay YOU 50 to take him.
Kidding. The wife would then pay somebody to take ME.
Best to you.

Well, hey...
The same species that produced Mother Theresa also produced Charlie Manson...

haha! It wasn't actually the rickeybird that I learnt about their noise!

There's a "bird zoo" I guess you'd call it, essentially it's like a zoo but they only have birds there that's near me, pretty sure it's where my obsession began.

There was a Patagonian conure in a huge aviary with a load of Yellow crest Too's, big Macaws, a Hahns macaw and some African Greys. The conure was the loudest of the lot by a country mile!

In relation to a ringneck I've had a bite from one before when I was looking at buying it from a terrible owner who was neglecting and I suspect abusing the poor creature (called animal welfare on them) and the ringneck is doing far better now with a rescue. That bite was too much for me to handle, just sliced my hand open. I know it was just because she was scared but it put me off them. I'm sure I'll find someone who steals my heart! Most likely another tin conure, I find them so funny in their ways. But I am definitely open to a Pionus now
