I have been a smoker for around 5 years now, I am turning 22 this month and have been smoking since I was 16-17. I hate it. They are like my little friends that come with me everywhere and drain my life and money. SO I have made a choice to QUIT once and for all!

Since I will be adopting a bird very soon I have decided that the day I adopt I am going to quit. I am one of those people who needs inspiration to quit haha (as if lung cancer isnt inspiration enough eh!) I know having a fid around will help me since they have such sensitive respiratory systems even though I wouldnt smoke around the bird even just visiting with the bird after I smoke, wash my hands etc. still makes me so nervous. Does anyone here smoke and have birds?

Its very hard for me to quit because my mom smokes and I live with her (we never smoke inside btw) I know its going to be extra hard but I know I can do it.

Any other smokers here who can relate? or anyone want to offer some supportive words of wisdom!? lol

Sorry I cant relate directly, but I know many people that smoke and can understand the burden somewhat. But good on you for quitting! Good for you, good for the new bird, good for everyone - you really cant loose! I wish you all the best with it!

Thanks! I really appreciate it, I know its going to be tough but its only been 5 years. better sooner rather than later!

ooooo I checked out the birdtricks site and WOW its incredible! I also found a bunch of youtube videos with the womac brothers and other trainers who work with them. Im so excited! It looks like a lot of work but fun too and the birds seem to LOVE it.

Everytime I feel like a smoke Ill just start a training session to take my mind off it lol

better sooner rather than later!

Too right, kick the habit now. You'l be so glad you did:)

Yep the Womach brothers sure do some cool stuff. Even if your bird doesn't make a 'fine art' out of tricks, the relationship building during the training sessions is so worth it. It challenges their inquisitive intelligent little brains:)

Now I just gotta get study outa the way so I can start doing some lol

I would never never smoke a cigarette. They literally stink! I do have a friend who has a CAG and a roomate that smokes heavy. This bird has been a plucker for the years she has been exposed to the nicotine. So sad because captive birds have enough to deal with that contaminates their environment much less caused by a human smoking. I would say you have lots of reasons to quit and my hats if off to you. It is not an easy thing.

You go girl !!!!!!!!!!! If I can do it Anyone can

I had smoked for 12 years and quit 7 weeks ago.......

I feel healthy, clean, and taste everything differently. :)

My kids love hugging and kissing me again..... :)

Always smoked outdoor, never any where near my AG Mishka
What I hated was the smell of smoke, my breath and my clothes.
One Sunday sitting outside smoking, I decided to make a list of the pro's and con's of me smoking
I then realized I just had so many excuses to have another cigarette.
Being a single parent, running my own business, everyday stress.

I made myself a promise If I smoke again "no more parrot forum"

It worked for me. Not once have I had a craving for one, been to busy on the forum. Lol I would rather spend my precious time, interacting with my 2 kids, :Dspoiling my bird, :grey:chatting to other bird lovers. :blue2::green::yellow1:

When your mom smokes, walk away, there is always something interesting to learn on the forum.

Any time you need to chat, this is where you will find me, well most of the time anyway......

Good luck YOU CAN DO IT ;)

I started smoking at 13 - my brother and I would steal my dads smokes!!

I quit when I fell pregnant with my first child then started up as soon as I stopped breast feeding, I fell pregnant again and quit again, this time for about 18mths. 2yrs later I became a fitness junky so quit again for about 5yrs, then my brother died, I smoked for about a year after his death then quit again. It's been 2yrs since I last quit. I still crave it now and then and every year since Micks death I go to the crash site on the M4 (he died in a motorcycle accident) and "have a smoke with him".

It is hard and although I have started and stopped many times each time it got easier because I knew I'd done it before. The best thing is to change habits - instead of going outside after a meal I'd chomp on a carrot and do something inside. Tell your mum not to leave them laying around so you're not tempted.

Good Luck

Sorry about your brother, that's tragic Mel. I guess as we get older, things get easier. Be proud of yourself, for not smoking. :D

After my mom passed away in March this year, I began to chain smoke.
She actually died from lung cancer, she herself smoked.
I realized I was going down hill, the smoking had to stop, there and then.

I agree with you change habits.........

Now my only habit is "the forum"

I smoked for over thirty years until I got cancer ten years ago (I quit after my recuperation period from surgery and radiation). I took a prescription pill called Zyban and, after three weeks, I was taking about two puffs a day so I decided to throw them away and not to buy anymore. I haven't smoked since. I still miss them sometimes but the trick is not to give in to the urge and start again.

I once read that it takes fifteen years for your lungs to be clean after you quit so yes, quit as soon as you can.

Well done, so proud of you :D for thirty years wow.
I guess having cancer gave you a big wake up call
Well let me tell you something, if I live for the next 30 years
I AM GOING TO BEAT YOUR RECORD LoL :p

Im very sorry to hear about your brother Mel. I have a younger brother and cant even imagine losing him:(

Your right about changing habits as well. I associate my day to day activities with smoking and switching it up will be hard. Which is why making a huge change in my life by adopting a bird will make changing habits a little easier. I dont want to sound like im using the bird as incentive to quit and thats it. Im quitting mostly for myself and have wanted a bird for as long as I can remember. I just know it will be better for the both of us when I do. (notice the "when" I do instead of "if" lol;)

This forum will also help me in my journey. Everyone here is very supportive! Thanks everyone:)

I've used other things for incentives every time - usually my kids. I actually liked smoking so needed something else to motivate me - as if serious illness wasn't enough. Whatever works, I think a new beginning is a great time to quit

I only smoked for 5 months when I was 14. I would buy cigarettes from the drugstore by my high school and smoke everyday with my friends, but when my little magical birdie came into my life, I knew it was something I would have to quit. It was hard because I got into the habit hard. but I needed a change in my life. And my little keet S'mores gave me that chance after I rescued her. What helped me break my habit was the excitement and impatience to get home and play with her. Now, I never felt so good since I quit 2 years ago, AND I have my tiel and tortoise along for the ride! So yeah, quit while you can. Smoking is bad for you and you'll feel so good when you do. (and for your bird too!)

Thats awesome she inspired you to quit and you stayed quit for 2 years! I cant wait to have that feeling:)

Its so gross having ash tray breath, stinky clothes, yellow teeth and fingers, damaged lungs etc...yuck!:26:

Its strange how we can enjoy something so much that is so disgusting and bad for us!

You are so right; nicotine is a mean little addictive sustance! Quitting won't be easy, but I know you can do it! Just like antoinette said, hang out here when you get the urge; we'll encourage you! :D

I have a problem guys !!!!!!!!!

I always get the urge to stay on the parrot forum

Good for you for quitting! If you need additional motivation, spend some time with somebody who is dying on hospice for lung cancer. NOT pretty!

Also, my grandmother smoked for 40 years and was able to quit. I'm not sure what method she used though. She still died from lung cancer though. D:

Have you tried those electric cigarettes? I think they're neat because you can control the amount of nicotine you get (different cartridges have different amounts), so you can wean yourself off nicotine without having to deal with breaking the habit of smoking at the same time. They are also much cleaner, since there is no smoke, and they don't stink! I've seen people smoke them indoors and I didn't smell anything.
