Smoking...Ugh

Bravo to all who have quit smoking. Those of us who breathe the same air thank you. And those who love you, thank you, as well. If you must be addicted to something, the Parrot Forum is the way to go!

Sorry to be bringing this post back up. I read it when i first joined and now here i am. Day one without a smoke....8 hours in and my grandmother went somewhere she shouldnt have with my nerves. oops! But so far so good. I thought about how much money i would be saving, how much free time i would have (i have never smoked in the house so everytime i smoke its 10 minutes im just sitting on the porch..) And i want to be smoke free for when rocky comes home. I quit both times i was pregnant and remained a non smoker a few months after they were born, but i always found an excuse to get back into it.
So far, so good. Just a little annoyed...at EVERYTHING :)
Thanks for listening!!

thanks roxy. lol just trying to keep busy. I have cleaned and organized every pantry closet, drawer, ect some twice lol!

I have seen people using them, they look like they work but i never found out if the cost for the refills was pretty much the same as buying a pack?

Hi Sadie good on you. I am a reformed smoker. It's been 5 years now & i did it cold turkey as well. I woke up one morning, had 2 ciggies in my packet, thought about throwing them in the bin but decided i would smoke the last two & that was it. I didn't look back or miss it at all. The thing is you have to be ready & want to give up for yourself.

Oh & i was a 25 a day smoker for 35 years on & off. Stopped with each pregnancy.

wow, 5 yrs. congrats!
i went a year and a half and i thought i was good, then my hubby has an MS scare so we went back to smoking during all the tests and scans... and i havent been interested in quitting again until now. Hopefully this is it!

Well Sadie my hubby had major bowel surgery just over 2 years ago. He had a large tumor removed & I was under so much stress, smoking was the furtherest from my mind. I just had my little bottle of rescue remedy.

Honestly it has nothing to do with will power or anything else. If your ready & it's what you want for you then you can & will do it.

For me, it was very difficult even though I wanted to. I thought Chantix would do it. And it probably would have if I hadn't developed a bad allergy to it. But, it did make me pretty sick; I threw up breakfast and dinner every day. I also was so tired I would just conk out if I sat down. But, I didn't want to smoke, whether that was because it was working, or because it made me nauseated and tired, I'm not sure, lol!

What I did do was cut down from 25 to 16 pretty easily. From there I cut down to 10 per day. Once I was down to that I was able to use the nicotine gum without chomping on so much my mouth and throat hurt from it.

Those of you who went cold turkey have my greatest respect!

roxy i tried the cutting back way, so i think you are amazing for that one! If i leave myself one or a few i end up babying it and drawing out the cravings longer.
im sipping on wine and listening to my ipod for the moment. Once the kids are in bed is normally my smoke time. so im really trying not to think about it. Being able to come back to the forum instead of go searching for a but has been great too!

Pedro, i think my new stress reliever will be a nightly mojito lol. smoking was just such a nice way to wait for test results. and my 2nd daughter was in the nicu for a week because of a pnumothorax, so i went back to smoking immediatley after she was born.
Between my kids wanting to do crafts and me asking to wait till i smoke and then we can do it, and saftey for the bird. i really do think it is time.
Thanks for chatting me through this lol! and sorry for rambling!

I just made myself not have more than one an hour. That is how I got to 16. It was also winter and going out to smoke sucked, lol! I purposefully waited til winter to quit. I stayed with the 16 for awhile and then said, ok, make it 1.5 hours now to get to 10. And once I was on 10 it was like my addiction was nowhere near as bad.

But, every single nicotine replacement thing I tried just wasn't enough for someone who smokes more than a pack a day. I was allergic to the patch adhesive. And it didn't help me much anyway. The gum made my mouth and throat hurt so much I was like, forget it! The first of those fake cigarettes wasn't so great either. I hear they are much better now. The gum was what got me through my work day, so it was my best bet; just couldn't use so much that it drove me nuts with how it made my mouth and throat feel (and it made my voice very croaky as well).

Talk about it all you want. I understand totally!

i have never tried the chantix, the patches dont work and yeah the gum...it made me gag, they dont even try to make it taste good! I have smoked on and off for about 12 yrs, but the most i would smoke is one an hour. (unless something majorly stressful was going on) so i guess it is easier to quit cold turkey when you are use to going without for a while...

Its crazy what finally makes you WANT to quit! I have visited my dad every month for the past yr. He was a smoker his whole life and he has lung cancer, emphasema, he cant sit up without the oxygen tank, it never phased me. I would walk out of the care home and light up lol. But it really bugs me that im putting my kids off to smoke! Well, day one done! 2 more rough ones to go!

Congratulations on your first day!

If you are having too rough of a time and think you will slip back into it, I think the eciggs are a good idea. I've heard excellent things about them. I just found this website and it looks like the refills are cheaper than a pack of cigarettes. This site looks like it has some good info: E Cigarette Reviews - Trust Only Electronic Cigarette Reviews From Pros

Do you need any more motivation to stop? I have a couple of lung cancer stories if you're interested. lol.

Look at it this way: even if you stay addicted to the ecigs you aren't hurting yourself or anyone else.

we have a stand at the mall with a guy always standing there smoking, making you have a double take lol. They do look neat and sadly...i enjoy smoking.

its lthe best reward after cleaning!
oh well. I am doing good this morning too. I am actually over needing one. i just WANT one. trying to keep my fingers busy. I may just carpet clean the whole house today :)

Gum, carrots, something to gnaw on. I like pretzel rods, too. I suck all the salt off, then take a bite and eat it, then suck the salt off the next part, etc. Carrots are healthier though, lol!

I've been smoking since I for over 20 years. I don't smoke in the house & I try to limit it. But I do feel tied to my pack. When they made airlines non-smoking & thought, well I'll never get to see Hawaii (because the flight is so long & I couldn't make it that long without one!). I'm not ready to quit yet so, think I'll run outside & grab a smoke. LOL

That was the whole idea... to get people addicted... and it worked! Then the government cashed in on it, and they up that every year... If every one gave up smoking, the country would go into bankruptcy.. or whatever it's called..

I HATE politics!
