Sinna, the surprise bird :)

Hi everyone my name is Rachel. I am new to the conure world, but not entirely by choice. I have what I believe to be a jenday conure. I do not know if it is male or female, my husband and I refer to it as a him and have named it Sinna.

Sinna was kind of forced upon us. He just showed up one day when my husband was sitting outside and I was at work. Literally just flew into our yard and landed on our patio table. I have 2 outdoor/indoor cats. After a while (close to an hour) they decided they didn’t like the attention the mystery bird was receiving from my husband and started stalking the bird. James brought the bird in the house and ended up putting the bird in an old mouse cage (1.5 x 2 feet)

From the start Sinna wanted nothing to do with me, always wanting to bite me and freak out when I tried to touch him, but he loved my husband. We searched for 4 days for the bird’s owner; I must have called at least 50 places and notified all local businesses. At this point my husband was getting attached and I felt bad for it having such a small cage. I bought it food and a little perch the next afternoon. Then a cage that measures 3H x 3W x 2D and tons of toys, in fact we got another 13 toys in the mail yesterday from dr. foster and smith.

WELL we have had Sinna for around a month now. And things are getting better; he is calmer now and loves attention. He sleeps in his happy hut every night, and waits for me on his rope every morning. He takes baths in the water dish at least once a week that we know of. Unfortunately Sinna generally sends the day time alone. 4 days ago the bird lamp came in the mail and we think we can actually tell a difference in behavior.

- We have no idea how old Sinna is, but as far as we know he knows no commands or words. He now tries his hardest to say up when we talk to him but it has no meaning because he will NOT go up on anyone’s fingers. If I try I get bit, no blood has been drawn but it’s been really close. He will go up on my husband’s shoulder but not mine. He loves to cuddle in my hands and the sleeves of my sweatshirt. And LOVES to lick people. He is much gentler then he used to be I can give kisses and he has no problem with that, he even licks my husband’s lips when they exchange kisses.

Aww! The cage looks perfect! Has the vet seen him yet? I bought this book recently, and I found it very helpful, since I knew little about conures.

I would definitely say it was a Jenday.

Here's some info on Jendays, just in case :)

Beautiful Jenday you've got there :) Welcome to the flock by the way. Don't hesitate to ask any questions if you've got them. We're all pretty friendly and crazy about our Fids :)

Im so glad this guy found you, looks and sounds like you have given him a great home

We love him. We are trying to get the money together to bring him to the vet. I spent to much money on cage, toys, food instead. So my priorities weren't perfect. But we are hoping soon.

Sinna now loves to perch on the shower rod while I shower

Wow, Sinna is lucky to have found you. You and your husband have provided such a loving home for him!

We are trying I think we realize the things we need to work on. Like providing more fresh fruits, vegetables. More play/teaching. Sinna does come put every day. For a minimum of 30 minutes to 6 hours. He generally just does his own thing on top of his cage, grooms himself, relaxes (seems content he is quite and calm)

Is there anything wrong with us doing this?

He does venture over to us on the couch but it is on his terms. No pressure and since he is still unsure about things I think it helps build his confidence.

I figure if I am home and an going to be there for a while, the bird deserves to come out. Even if it is for solo time. We whistle together a lot across the house. I just have to remember it can take up to 30 minutes to get him back in the cage. I'm guilty of tricking with food :/ he loves hand cuddles but refuses to step up .. and bites my extended finger.

Congrats on your new family member! I am very happy that Sinna found his way to you as opposed to someone else who would not want him or would not give him the life he needs. You seem to be giving him everything he needs thus far but I cannot recommend enough that he gets to the Avian Vet ASAP. Never know how long he was in the "wild" or what he may have encountered. It brings joy to my heart to read about all the toys you've gotten for him. It does get expensive though! :)

I have been reading tons of forums and have realized how important the vet visit is and I also wanna know if Sinna is male or female. The toys are expensive but I found good deals on Dr Foster and Smith. I got 13 toys for $61 shipped.

At a vet visit can they provide me with an estimated age?

They can try and guess her age, but once a parrot reaches their adult coloration, there's really no way to tell unless the bird has a leg band with a year of birth on it.

DNA sexing usually costs around $25, although I've heard a-vets charging $40-$60 for the same test, so you may want to ask about the price on that first!

I'm kind of nervous to bring Sinna to the vet because he hate new people (granted he doesn't like anyone all that much yet) and new sounds are a big no no. But you will al be happy to know that Sinna will see a vet by the end of November. At least that's the plan

Side note. I never knew that birds licked. It is the weirdest thing, Sinna wont step up or stand on me but will lick my hands like crazy and cuddle with them as long as no 1 finger is extended. Its all or nothing when it comes to fingers

I agree about checking out the pricing for sexing. I took my bird to the vet for the first time and their lab company wanted $90 for the sexing fee. :O
They gave me a little sample of his blood for free since they took some for his regular blood panel anyway, and I was able to male it away to get the sexing for $19!

Yeah welcome to bird ownership now don't worry you'll get used to being his slave. When at the vet take care of what got your bird in trouble in the first place, his being able to fly. Then you can start working on step-up and other training (it's called dependent transportation) he must then depend on you to get around and must listen to what you want to get what he wants don't worry the feathers grow back and by the time they do you should have a very well behaved bird who you have trained to wear a harness, so he can have flight again without getting lost in the wild and having to get lucky enough to find another family who will spoil him like you will.

How big is the bar spacing on that cage? The space from bar to bar. If Sinna has too much space he could put his teeny head between, wiggle a bit, and break his neck, other foot. :( One budgie I had squeezed through a bar on the bottom grate and it was not happy. :( :(

Maybe it is just my stupid eyes without contacts. If it is, than just forget everything I just said. Oh, 5/8" of an inch is the max, I think, for a conure. Please correct me if I'm wrong. :)

I would continue to search for the owners past 4 days... Someone has lost their little bird!

Has he got a leg ring? A microchip?

I lost my corella many years ago, and I got her back, due to people calling the RSPCA... I traveled far and wide to look at corellas being found... The last one was Cory, she was less than 0.5 km's from my house... She was missing for a week...
