Alexandrine Parrot
Hello. My husband and I live in the country outside of San Antonio Texas on 5 1/2 wooded private acres. About 2 months ago I was outside gardening and an Alexandrine Parrot landed on the ground next to me. My husband put his hand out to the bird and it jumped on. He lived in a dog kennel for about 3 wks while we tried everything possible to find his family with no luck. We love feeding and creating habitats for wild birds on our property. Never imagined keeping a bird in a cage. Kinda broke our hearts in the beginning. We know we can’t just let him go and have committed to caring for him. We really lucked out because he’s a very chill bird. He will sit on our shoulders for hours or hang out in and on his large cage that we got him. We just open the door and he pretty much just stays on the cage. We know he’s a male because of his colors. He’s never bitten us but can destroy most things with one snap. We are trying to learn as much as possible to keep him happy. So glad to have found this forum. He eats fruit and veggies not a big fan of pellets and loves pistachios, almonds, and millett. Everything I read says pellets should be his main diet. I’ve just retired and have been obsessed with researching Alexandrines. Finding a lot of conflicting info. I think Echo has adjusted well to our family. He even will let my little grandkids feed him by hand. Just found a vet to take him and get his nails trimmed. Should I try to target train him? We just bought another large cage to put under our pool porch which has ceiling fans and is very comfortable temp wise. I would like to let him hang out there while we’re at the pool or outside gardening etc…. Any advice on anything would be highly appreciated. Wish we knew how old he is. Thanks again for any advice.

Welcome and be welcomed! We have a large contingent of Alex owners on here. Please peruse all the subforums - there is a wealth of info on here. In particular, since you are new parrot parents, read with deep understanding the "I Love Amazons" thread at the top of the AMazon subforum, it has TONS of vital good info that is common to all parrots, not just Amazons.

What Wrench said! Love ya, Wrenchie.
