I am leaving to a better paying job :)

The store really isn't cruel to the animals. With this bird it's really just a case of store wide ignorance. THey don't understand that what they're doing in wrong and they won't listen to me. Yeah the bird will cost me twice as much as from a breeder but at least with me, she'll get the attention she needs, a good diet, and a friend to play with. I know my dad is going to fall hard for her. She wins everyone over with how silly she is. She's a little nut case. Tuesday might be the day I buy her if the vet goes well. I'll keep you all updated :)

Good luck ! Everyone here I'm sure has their fingers and toes crossed everything goes well and you bring home the little baby :)

I asked a Petsmart manager once on how they hire people. I was told you needed sales experience and they can careless if you have all the animal experience in the world. To me if that's the case, they're in the wrong business field....people who have absolutely no knowledge of the animals that work with animals is accidents waiting to happen.

Exactly. It's a job that someday you will look back on and just shake your head. But, when you are young, you have to work some jobs like that, but on the road ahead they won't matter that much.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you as well, and the poor bird hoping it is ok.

I have two big chain pet stores near me.One of them has the same staff most of the time that has some sense about most pets and especially birds. The other one, though, has a bunch of people that don't know what they're talking about. So that petsmart manager must be right.Everytime I go in they have some sickly looking bird that doesn't sell for like a year. Now they have a rose breasted cockatoo with one or two toys and they say they never get it out because it can't be handled without getting bit.Imo that isn't good sales techniques lol but they definitely need to get some experienced people.

Helitorian I hope you get him he deserves a great caring home.

I guess I don't know anything about the staff that works at mine. I mostly only talk to them at the cash register. I was in one store buying stuff for Pete the day after I got him and one walked past me and commented, "You must have a really big bird!" And I just said, yes, he's pretty big.

I usually get into a conversation because when they ask what bird I have an I say African grey,I get swarmed with questions.I usually get small toys because Pearl doesn't like things bigger than her.

I get swarmed when I bring Willie along with me....

I was hired because of my pet knowledge. I had no sales experience prior to this job lol Our new people though have very little knowledge about anything and my manager thinks she's gonna train them all perfectly. She can barely do her own job...

I'm very thankful for everyones advice and encouragement. I'm really excited about bringing home my new baby. Even my family, who knows nothing about birds, are telling me to bring her home. They've already met her and love her to death.

I really wish this job had gone differently. I wish I wasn't leaving with my coworkers hating me for things I never did. My family says I should just quit if I'm being treated so poorly but I want to stick it out for the last 12 days. I just need patience lol

If I ever found you in my isles, I'd be all over you :) I LOVE finding bird people and only two have ever brought a bird in for me to meet.

I usually go to the local Petsmart for most of Pyro's needs. They always have 1 baby sun conure, parakeets, finches, love birds and cockatiels. They know me well there because it was one of their baby suns that really got me looking into getting a bird. Anyways, they always ask me to bring Pyro in for them to see. I haven't because it is very cold in Michigan and I prefer not to take him outside right now unless he needs a vet visit. I've been toying with the idea of bringing him in once the weather is nice. I'm just afraid because I know most bird illnesses are airborne and I just don't trust that their birds are healthy. I have been bringing in pictures for them and I guess that will have to due.

I worry about that, too. The infection Merlin caught during shipping was airborne. And I know cockatiels can carry diseases that don't make them sick, but they can spread them to other birds.

I was in the petstore my friend works for and the store manager over heard us talking about our dogs and he said" puppies throw up all the time ,it's normal". I almost fell over !
I told him No ,it's not normal and it's a reaction to something else.
He was surprised to hear me say that and asked more questions.
Another store manager considered the bunnies there as lower life forms !! I was surprised to hear my friend didnt just knock him out right there and then , not very professional , yes , but I would think if anybody deserved it , he did :(

These store chains dont care about animal experience .
It is sad , but we feel sorry for the animals and buy them to give them a better home and a chance at a life it wouldnt have staying there , but we are making room for more poor souls.
It is our nature though , we are what we are and I know I couldnt turn my back on a animal I knew was in a bad situation.
I would think there has to be a way to correct this though.
If enough people spoke out about their experiences in these stores , maybe someone will listen who can actually get the ball rolling and we can somehow get a proper bill of rights for the animals .
But , a job is a job when you have mouths to feed , be it humans or fur or feathered , etc...

I know what you guys mean about the virus illness....I didn't even go near the birds as I was in banfield with Willie to get his nails done as they had a avian vet there, she was very good. BUT she quit there and went to my vet clinic where I take my other animals, so my birds goes to my vet clinic now. I rather do my bird's nails on my own but unfortunately I can not do Willie's alone as my partner refuse to help me with it.
