Should I?

RIP Constantine: Jenday Conure
I'm putting my two weeks in at PetsMart today! I can't want to get out of there but there is one person (um...bird) I'm sad to leave behind. Little Sweet Pea is our five month old Conure who has bonded with me much to the dislike of the other employees. Here is my dilemma. I have the money for her and she and Con get along pretty well already. Should I buy her (him)?

I'm the only person who spends time with this bird and plays with her or bothers to teach her anything. Yesterday I had to take her to the vet because her urine was reddish orange and my manager didn't care! Sweet Pea was dehydrated because my other coworker moved her perch away from her water dish and she couldn't reach it! They don't care about the poor thing :(

Should I do it, guys? Thoughts and advice please. Thanks!

If you want her, why not? And you said she gets along with Con, so that's always a good way to start with bringing home another bird. Rowdy hated my BCC initially and it was kind of hard. So at least if they like each other, it should go well.

How will you feel if you leave her there? Probably bad and up all night thinking about her. The Petsmart I know takes good care of their birds. Did they pay for the vet visit? If you think the bird is bonded to you then by all means buy her before you leave. Will you get a discount that way?

Do it. I don't generally encourage people to "save" animals for pet stores as it just makes room for another one, but this is a bird you've bonded with, and that you know gets along with your current bird. I see no reason not if you have the space, funds and time for her.

I say do it. You've been toying with the idea, you know you want another bird. ;)

I agree I would do it. Based on the facts that you want another bird, Con gets along with her well and you can afford it.

I would probably work on socializing her after you get her home though to others so she can be handled by more than you but that is just my thinking.

I think you will be glad you brought her home.

Do it !! You will regret it if you dont and you will feel even worse if something happens to the little guy/gal.
I know some of these stores dont take the best care of their livestock and if it comes down to spending a dime on vet care , they would rather take the animalin the back and keep it there until it dies :( My friend who is now a store manager , spent oodles on a parakeet whose eye was pecked out by the ones . She knew the store would just let it die then spend any money on a parakeet. Well , thanks to her , Buddy's fine now , minus a eye , but he is doing just fine and is the most hand tame little bugger i ever seen. :)

If I were you I would get my last employee discount and buy that bird . It's just meant to be ;)
Let us know what you decide !

I agree with everybody else. You will agonize and mentally beat yourself up with worry if you don't.

I make the vote unanimous! "Until there's none, rescue one!" Plus, use your employee discount while you can.:)

Thanks you guys :) I thought about it long and hard at work while watching her. She didn't even notice me standing in front of her. She was all fluffed up and sleepy. I just wanted to stuff her under my shirt for the rest of my shift. When I picked her up to take her to our sick room, she said I love you then cuddled against my neck :(

I spoke with my manager and told her I was going to buy Sweet Pea tomorrow but she said to wait a few days so I don't have to foot the vet bills if she is really sick. I will wait until tuesday to hear the verdict on her. Apparently, she has had blood in her urine and that's a sign of kidney problems, I believe?

Also, my employee discount is only 15% :/ so 15% of 600. Better than buying without the discount! :)

Buying her means I need to buy a quarantine cage and get a DNA test done asap. I'm thinking Sweet Pea is actually a he by the way s/he dances for Con. I don't know if I'm ready for any Sunday babies lol I'll just have to keep all nesting objects and material out of the cage. Oh and I'm also changing the name to Helios, the Greek Sun God. Its a little less common which I like and I can call him Heli for short :p

I hope she is not sick. But, if she is, maybe you can use that fact to get her at a discount price. Considering the upcoming vet bills, etc. When I take in a bird, I impress on the owner that the price they think the bird is worth is for a healthy, full feathered baby, with no problems. Your manager seems like a nice person, telling you to wait for the results from the vet. Maybe they'd be willing to bargain for a bird that might be unsalable in it's present condition. Also, if you do not take it now, others will not care as much for it, and it may die. Then, they'll get nothing for it. Use whatever leverage that you feel you can! You should not have to pay so much for this bird. But, I want to thank you for considering taking in this little sweetie. If everyone who loves birds could rescue just one, there'd be so many less to worry about.

Yes, you should... Don't leave her there...

I guess I, too, would wait for the verdict from the vet. Let the bills be on the petstore. And if whatever he has is going to cut down on his life span or cost you a lot of money, maybe they will just give you the bird, or give it to you for a much lower price.

I'll be going in later tonight to look at her poop as I'm the only employee who can read bird poop. I'll check it everyday until Tuesday then ask for a vet appointment so she can have a physical and I'll ask about lowering the price tonight. I'm excited about getting her :)

If you can , just to so your reasoning for taking the bird to the vet , grab the freshest stool sample and drop it off at the vet office and let them run it. Just a thought.

Conures poop pretty frequently so chances are good the bird will poop while it's there. I've never had a bird not poop at the vet's, lol!

lol. Chances are good he will poop there , but my reasoning for taking a poop there for testing without the bird is to be able to talk the price of the bird down if the manager doesnt agree to taking it to the vet for a wellness visit. He may only give you a certain percentage off and that's it because you are a employee and he cant give anymore , but with a bad result from the poop may decide the bird isnt fit for sale at all and he may as well give you the bird ...just trying to get that bird out of there and have it vetted ASAP :) I really hope it doesnt have anything too serious and gets well fast. I'm sure he/she will be happy with you Helitorian :)
