should i get a blue & gold macaw or an african grey?

The short answer is not too bad.
She did lay one egg mainly cuz we were letting her “make a nest” in the kitchen cupboard.
We don’t allow that anymore.

From what I have seen on YouTube male CAG’s are harder to deal with. They get really worked up trying to feed (regurgitate) and mate with you.
Our Bella does do a little regurgitation for my wife but not too much.

The only aggression with her is what I would call cage aggression. When I feed her she likes to play “catch the fingers “ and she means business.

Almost never to me.
She regurgitates for my wife usually when she is in her cage and my wife stops by for a scratch.

It’s a little gross by human standards.
By bird standard it’s flattering and a complement.
I can say this cuz my Yellow nape regurgitates to me.
Most of what he brings up he re-swallows.
But it’s something that you don’t want to encourage.
I put my Yellow nape back in his cage when he gets like that.

hello everyone,
after the death of my last birds two years ago now i feel in the next year i will be ready for another (also depending on lifestyle factors.) and was wondering if an african grey or a BG macaw would suit me better so i will say a bit about what im looking for. I would love a silly and playful bird that i can train free flight and tricks/commands that just wants to be in my company and is very affectionate, for me the bigger the better. I know individuals vary but would also like a cuddly bird (i am willing to spend a lot)

Any bird is destructive if you allow it to be. The key is to train your bird not to damage things and to watch it like a hawk!

My avian vet’s office has a lot of chewed molding and wooden picture frames. I have not experienced chewed molding, frames or furniture, but there was (operative word being “was”) a cheap bath mat in the bathroom that my macaw loved to pluck. I have super expensive hand-knotted wool and silk rugs throughout my house. He doesn’t touch those because the weave is so tight, but cheap bath mats are like catnip to him! Needless to say I do not buy bath mats anymore.

This little Grey I have , all I could find out is I'm the Fourth owner and He is 30 to 40 years old . He came in a Tiny Parakeet cage Now He's in a Macaw cage . He Never had Toys and all those years he was Fed only seeds , Now he's on Pellets , and Vegetables ( Frozen , Thawed , Peas , Broccoli ,Califlower , Carrots ) He throws Fresh Vegetables onto floor . He has lots of Toys wood & rope But doesn't play with them , I even pretended I was chewing them , Now I have Paper Toys ordered . The First Three weeks He would Bite me . I think He is coming along Good now , He likes to sit on my hand & rub his head . Like I said He mostly chews Paper , What can I do to get him to play with Toys ? And He has ( I Think ) weak Feet . Arthritis ? Calcium Deficiency ? And now I mist Him with a spray Bottle He Loves it ! And do you know about Air Purifiers ? Thank You for Advice & Suggestions .

He still has the original manzanita perches that I bought 40 years ago (with slight gnawing on some of the ends) and his swing is still swinging (albeit faded and missing an few wooden pieces) after 35+ years! I read about people buying toys monthly. I reassemble chewed up toys, add leather laces for him to un-knot and buy new chew toys every few years. If I find a good one for a good price that he likes I buy several for a backup stash.

Goes to show that every bird is different. Mine is not as big chewer. A paper shredder, yes (and that costs nothing), but not a chewer.

Where do you get your Leather laces ? Or are they Leather shoe laces ?

im also surprised your macaw is not a chewer, but it shows every bird as an induvidual.

Crazy, right? He respects his perches. He sleeps in exactly the same spot on the same perch every single night and has done so for decades! I have told him if he chews his sleeping perch so it is too short to attach to the cage in exactly the same position, I will have to MacGuyver a solution—and it won’t be pretty! He got the message.
