I've noticed several recent posts with member email addresses in them. There are some bots that scour the web for addresses to harvest. Some people use the format name dot com instead of name.com for a little bit of safety - it probably doesn't make a huge difference, but it does make some..

How do we check?

Use the PM function of Parrot Forum! Do not place a email address as part of a Thread or Post. With the Spider Activity on the 'Web' (neat pun :D) within minutes of hitting 'Submit Reply' is out in the Web. Never use an Email Address!

Spider = bots!

Thanks Karen! Great Thread!

Sailboat is right. If you want to be alarmed, go look up your own name on Spokeo dot com. also Google your username. You'll find so many links to information about yourself...so it's a god idea to be as protective as you can. I regularly check the latest Facebook privacy settings to opt out of things, I have to regularly re-list my phone on the do not call registry and have blocks on my credit reports. I use Dashlane as a password manager and change my incomprehensible passwords regularly. Spiders and crawlers can piece together a surprising amount of information about you. You can also go get a gmail address and use one address for personal, trusted communication and another for mailing lists etc.

Thanks Karen, great thread! One of the tasks of mods is to remove sensitive information from threads, such as email addresses, phone numbers, etc. We edit as needed and send a PM to the member. Can't always catch them all, though!
