Shades is home

I can't imagine a domesticated CAG NOT enjoying a larger cage.

He seems to be pretty angry with me right now. I had to put him back in his cage, and he isn't happy about it. He's even growling at me. :-(

Yeah they dont like it sometimes.Bedtime is the only time Salty even remotely get nippy with me, ususally during the day he has no problem with it, because he knows he is coming out again. Just make sure its not ALWAYS fight to get him in, your want being inside his cage to be a safe haven, not a cell.

Ah new parrot feeling.. it delightful, right? Proud new parront its almost like having a new baby, only this one wont wreck the car or need collage funds.

You're not kidding! Even my husband said he feels like we have a new baby.

I'm hoping at some point he starts to understand what Salty does, and he wo't hate his cage as much. He was SO angry with me last night. He wouldn't even take his formula. At least he has his pellets at all times.

I'll be ordering his perch stand today. He'll love that.

He ate breakfast like a champ today, and I'm sure it's because he was hungry. He's certainly going to help me improve my schedule. Ha ha, who am I kidding? What schedule? Lol!

He will understand and soon.

I'm predicting he'll even get a "bedtime routine", something like a consistent vocalization or a routine of climbing about the cage in a patter right as you end the night.

Perjo does, and has since 3 mos. As soon as I turn TV off, she starts to go climb off her swing perch. As I turn lights off she starts climbing upside around her swing perch. Then when I grab the bed sheet (to cover the cage) she makes her way back to the swing perch and pushes off for one last swing. Once the cage is covered and I turn the final light off and say "good night, see you tomorrow" she gets comfortable and waits till I'm upstairs and lets out her high pitched whistle which serves as a thank you and love you call.

She does all that every single night.

Perjo sounds like a very sweet and smart grey. His cage is in the living room, and my husband and I are night owls. Since he's been home, we've been going into our bedroom much earlier than usual. I hope this trend continues, as it gives up the incentive and motivation to move our bedtime up. I partially cover his cage, but I'm feeling like I should get one of those cage covers.

He's getting more adventurous. He's flown off of his small cage onto the floor two time already. I know I need to let him explore, but I'm a bit apprehensive. I haven't quite figured out why I'm so nervous about it, though. :-(

I think he's already figured out how to make me run to him. I could just be over zealous, but whenever he is in the living room alone for more than a few minutes, he whistles. Each time he does, I go right to him to see what's up. I hope I'm not creating a bad habit. :D

On your last comment - better that you should develop a specific call to him when he does that whistle. Its a contact call, meaning " WHere are you? Are you OK?". Your answer back will tell him you are right in the next room and are OK, without having to run back and see him every time. Dont run back every time or you are indeed setting yourself up fr a problem.

I keep Perjo in the living room as well.

From time to time I bring her into my room to sleep in her smaller travel cage. Just for a change and to keep her close on nights she makes a lot of noise as if she was spooked or fell off her perch.

I agree on getting a few consistent whistle calls down as a means of communicating specific emotions and gestures.

Check out my Perjo thread, you'll see plenty of videos to hear us go back n forth. We have a language of sorts between us.
