Hi guys!

Looks like I'll be caring for a cockatoo for a little while. Going off to see him now. Going to snap a few pics to keep you guys updated. I have large bird experience, just not in my own home. So tips and tricks on toys, routine and food are appreciated! I'll continue to update my blog about him as well if you guys want the minute details. :) www.sequentialpsittacine.blogspot.com:yellow1:

So my roommate just finished driving us around to see Jojo the Moluccan Cockatoo! We stayed a while with the woman who was temporarily caring for him, she introduced us to jojo, his diet, past history and made me a long island iced tea. I wasn't driving so I had the ability to become a little intoxicated. ;-)

This woman is a volunteer for Florida Parrot Rescue and by the way she cares for her birds you know this is her "thing" she loves most! Her birds are nothing less than well taken care of with full spectrum lighting, good food, clean cages, toys, tv etc. And she expresses her devotion to these animals with two foster birds of her own and making sure that jojo has everything he needs before coming in to be fostered!

For example, tonight she sent me home with three large sacks of food and toys just for jojo! Pellets, golden feast, home made birdie bread and wooden toys! WOW! Talk about above and beyond!

We settled on a day to move jojo and looks like this Thursday is the day! Until then here is jojo and the massive amount of his food I received.

**oops. Looks like they are just on my blog right now. It's late and time to go to bed! Night all!**

Looking forward to more updates! She sounds like a really lovely lady, hopefully JoJo will be just as great for you. :D

I had one briefly in the past. I loved him, he was great. Trouble, but great. :p

I can't wait to get my hands on another. I think 'too owners are crazy and blessed all at once :p

That is a lot of stuff, she certainly wants Jojo to be happy where shes going! What a great lady. I like the photo of cuddles with Jojo. Looking forward to plenty more when home! :D

We'll see U2gal! Jojo just came home tonight and he is terribly shy and loud! Not surprising for a Moluccan, lol. I had the day off work and spent it getting cheap toy supplies for Jojo. And a giant cardboard box for him to hide in which was a good idea since he's so shy.

He hisses and shows discomfort if we walk too close. But I did some testing to see how we can walk past without scaring him. Well, we can't. I can either hang up a sheet in front of his cage to act as a visual barrier or, get this, he is perfectly comfortable if we crawl past his cage! What a scardy cat!

I have work early in the morning so I don't have time for teaching him what a clicker or what the word "good" means. I'll have to save that for the evening.

I'll see if I can't get more pics up.

A giant cardboard box for him to hide in is actually not a very good idea! He will adjust with time but I wouldn't leave that box in his cage. It reminds them of a nesting box and it can make them go into full hormone mode. Your more likely to get bit by him with that box around. Good luck!

Thanks for the reminder Mikey!

At this point though, because Jojo is still adjusting, I feel he needs to have the box to hide away in and build up his confidence. I'd rather have him learn to trust me by being able to remove himself from a scary situation by having a box, rather than not being able to hide in a box and have (what little trust he has gained from humanity) destroyed.

Again thanks for the reminder Mikey, I will deff be on the lookout for nesting behavior!

Cockatoos are pretty confident birds in my experience. They do afraid of new cages, toys, etc at first but get over them in a few days. If you do feel the box makes him feel more secure for the time being, then go for it. Cause he looks quite happy in the photos you took. He's a beauty!!!! ;)
