Safe home products to clean cage's ?

I have just used hot water (which gets cold fast anyway) to clean Shelby's cage & toy stand. It cleans but it's not disaffecting.

I really like the web store, My Safe Bird Store, owned by Kathie, but her disinfectants and any other sites, are very expensive. Can we make something at home that will do the same job as these products and safely ?

Here's her page & products-

Safe Cleaning & Disinfecting Supplies for Birds. We have F10!

For cage cleaning I like using my handheld steam cleaner. It does a great job, and it's just water. :)

For everyday I usually just use water and a scrubby pad. Once a week I use a 50 parts water to 1 part bleach solution to clean the whole cage. I was doing that more like monthly, but the vet said once a week is a better idea.

Im like Riomom using steam cleaner. Its high heat steamer with just water. :)

That's a good idea. I may use the microfiber sponge and towel so I don't hurt the powder coating. If their good enough for my 427 Cobra, it'll be fine for a bird cage.

Check this out. I'm so happy. I just got done showering with Shelby & she loved it !!! We,.....loved it !

We have a shower massage so I turned it on the fine, but not a mist. Fairly warm water. Since I haven't made a shower perch yet, I used the small stool chair that Patty used to sit on after her knee replacement. I put a towel on it and sat her down. I climbed in and turned the head over both of us. She spread her wings, walked around, did her "bobble head" and said. "pretty girl, you my baby" lol !!!

She did not like the towel to dry her, so I turned on the hair dryer to low temp, and she opened her wings and spun around. It was only for about 3 minutes and did not want to dry her, just enough to get the dripping done.

So, we couldn't be happier ! :D :white1:

I started off using Poop Off wipes for the furniture (still using) and the Poop off bottle with the "scrubber" for the carpet and a sponge to clean the cage. I decided to try a bottle of Pet Focus as it was on sale and I actually prefer it to the Poop Off. It seems to work better and more quickly.

It's really reasonable and mysafebirdstore sells a big bottle of concentrate that should last quite awhile. I bought one, but am still working on the first bottle. I really reccomend this stuff. It kills all the yuckies and is pet friendly.

Ive always use plain Alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, both very cheap too.Im allergic to most cleaners so the simpler the better.Personally I cant stand the smell of vinegar and only use that on salads.
I know peroxide is safe. But I always assumed alcohol is too.It evaporates and they used in the old days for thermometers and such.I use it to disinfect our toothbrushes too.

I've talked with the owner My Safe Bird Store, Kathie, and just really think the world of her ! I talked with my wife Patty and we feel safer with a dedicated cleaner for birds, at least for now. Once spring comes around, I'll take the cage out every two months, use diluted bleach and power wash it.

The concentrate is actually a reasonable price. I'll call Kathie and ask about both products you mentioned.

Awww , too cute ! She sounds like such a doll :) I can tell by your posts both of you are enjoying the heck out of Shelby. I'm very happy for you guys , what a nice happy ending , Shelby knows how lucky she is too. :) :white1:

I use a mix of vinegar (2-4 Tbsp. per quart), about 10 gtts. of GSE (grapefruit seed extract) which is your natural disinfection product and of course the water. For any impossible droppings I spray on AviClean. It works like a charm.

We sure do !
I wish she would eat the fresh veggies & fruit we bought for her !
All she eats is the "Nut Blend".
She doesn't play much either.

Try offering some cooked veggies and see what happens. She may just be reluctant to eat it in a new home, or she isn't sure what it is yet. Eat it in front of her as well so she sees it's food. I can get Rowdy to eat pretty much anything if she sees me eat it.

We haven't tried cooking them yet. I just offered a green bean, even eating like you suggested and nothing doing. I know it may take a while for her to settle down and get used to all of us.
(did you read my other thread about her and I taking a shower together yesterday. I'm so pround of her ?)

Shaklee Basic H and basic G is safe to clean their cages with. Don't put it in their food bowls, and rinse everything very well. It works wonders :) I have done plenty of research on it before I bought it. It is a great cleaner for EVERYTHING :) A natural vet told me to wash my dog with is because she has allergies to everything else.

There is loads of info about people using it on bird cages if you google it :)
