Hey everyone,

I'm experiencing something rather unsettling, was wondering if any of you ever have the same thing.

Lately I've been having recurring nightmares about parrots. It's not the parrots that are scary, it's actually me. For example, last week I dreamt that, apart from my lorikeet, I had brought home a second bird, a red macaw. In my dream, I suddenly realized: "Oh ****, I have two birds!". The macaw had become really mean and horrible and I was scared of him but I also felt extremely guilty because I'd forgotten to feed him and I had only spent time with my lorikeet. When I woke up I felt horrible and it took me minutes to realize I didn't actually have a macaw.

Then last night I dreamt basically the same thing except this time it was a - I don't know the English term, one of those grey ones with a red tail. I'd forgotton all about him, and he was lying on his back in a tiny cage along with two pigeons and a chicken. He looked about to die and he had plucked his chest to the point of bleeding. It was so sad :'(
In this same dream, my lorikeet had changed, too; he was now extremely fluffy, bright white with yellow and orange and his eyes were an agressive kind of yellow. He looked more like some sort of weird chicken. In my dream I figured that was because it was mating season or whatever.

Well anyway... I'm probably having these dreams because I've been stressed lately and feeling a little guilty for not spending enough time on Loki. Have any of you ever had this? Or these kinds of dreams? :p Is this normal xD

Thanks!
xxx Lorika

'Is this normal', you ask? I'd say no dreams are ever 'abnormal', especially since we really don't have much control over where our minds go when we sleep. :D

Luckily I've never had disturbing dreams about my fids, but plenty of 'other' disturbing dreams (aka nightmares).

Yeah, I guess you're right. I don't really know what I'm looking for in posting this - I just felt like I needed to tell someone who feels the same way about birds :)

I 'think' I can say with certainty that your dream is a reflection of how deeply you love your Loki!!! :)

I get dreams like that under certain circumstances. When I was pregnant with my first daughter I kept dreaming that I forgot to feed her and would leave her for days in the crib without remembering I had her.

Once in a while I'll have one about the animals. It's usually something about us having to move and instead of having the animals I have, in my dream I'll have like a dozen cats, which I don't have any cause I'm allergic. I'll be keeping them all in cages, and keep forgetting to feed and clean them.

I'm always relieved waking up from those type of dreams. I tend to get those when I'm not sleeping deeply and a lot of excitement is happening. Like now with christmas and lots of family plans. Obviously the ones while I was pregnant a lot was happening..and those were 27 years ago and still very fresh in my mind. I don't think it makes a difference whether it's good/bad/indifferent excitement, at least with me. I'm prone to vivid crazy dreams when anything is going on-new job, moving homes, new pet, sleep hours having to be changed drastically, having company, and then of course any bad thing happening like a death in the family.

I get similar dreams about my birds from my last relationship. I still have a lot of guilt for leaving them with my ex, and I have dreams that I lovked them in a room and forgot about them :( it rely sucks to have those dreams...

So this is odd but when i have dreams like this I like to research potential meaning, since dreams are often the visual manifestations of our mental states/emotions/thoughts, etc.

From dreammoods:
To see a parrot in your dream represents some message or gossip that is being conveyed to you. You need to think twice about repeating or sharing certain information. Alternatively, the parrot can denote a person in your waking life who is eccentric or obnoxious. It may also mean that you or someone is being repetitive or even mocking you. TOP

To dream of birds on the attack means that you are being pulled into too many directions. You are experiencing conflict with your spirituality. If the birds are trying to break into houses, then it implies that you are not following your desired path in life. Others are meddling in your life and interfering with your life path.

Red is the color of danger, aggression, and violence.

SO, an amature stab at interpretation, for the hell of it:
Your macaw might be representing someone or something that is making you feel overwhelmed/stressed with responsibility, and your parrot is your restbit from the stress.

Stress can manifest in many ways in a dream. Here it happens to be a macaw because your bird is at the forefront of your mind.

Of course this could be complete bunk. But its fun to consider.

It's not much of a stretch, to be honest. I think the neglected parrot represents the things I want to do, but can't get to because of so many other responsibilities. Alternative explanation would be that the neglected parrot is actually my lorikeet, whilst the lorikeet itself (who actually doesn't look like Loki at all) stands for things like studying, job, etc - things I have to give priority to. In that sense the dream might tell me that I'm afraid to neglect A parrot, which is true. I try to spend time with him as much as possible, but there are days when three hours just isn't feasible :(

That must have been terrible for you experiencing that. It's good when you wake up an get that feeling of relief when you realise it's not real though.

I must admit, I did laugh (forgive me) when I read about the lorikeet turning fluffy white, yellow and orange with aggressive yellow eyes for breeding season.

Dreams are funny things and I don't think it's something that we can always fully understand. It is definitely true that dreams can become more frequent, vivid or scary when you are stressed or not sleeping properly. It happens to me. I also think that sometimes they are manifestations of your feelings or fears but multiplied.

You are probably right in your feeling that it's a combination of your stress and guilt at not being able to spend as much time with him. it helps in stressful times to get some exercise (releases feel good hormones and reduces stress hormones) or do some relaxation exercises or meditation. It will improve your sleep. This was advice given to me by a psychologist when I was going through stressful times at work and sleeping very poorly. Hope this helps :)

Well I am a big believer in dreams. With that being said I think only YOU can correctly interpret your dreams.
I frequently have dreams about parrots. I don’t remember having a “ bad “ dream with parrots. Usually I am outside and the parrots are flying to me and I just love it. I think These are simply my desire to make friends with more birds and a reminder of how I acquired “Lucky” my first cockatiel.
I did have one other dream that was a re-occurring one. I would “ go blind” driving on the freeway on my way home from work. This dream ended when I had a very bad traffic accident at the same location where the “dream” would occur. This is why I say I believe dreams can be trying to tell you something.

I had a few bad dreams when I first got Willow, I chalk it up to anxiety and stress of having a new bird, as I am quite comfortable with her and haven't gotten any since I got her.

I had 3 dreams about parrots last night.

One Jet died.
Two I had a Macaw
Three someone lost their bird.

PS Jet shows no signs of being sick in any way. I think it's because when I first got him I had that dream and worry for several months. Originally he had a bad clip, was a terrible flier and broke multiple blood feathers daily. He flies great now. This thread made me remember those days.

Wow, how freaky! I hope you recovered from your accident ok. I know my sister gets bad anxiety driving now after having a bad accident. Luckily she wasn't injured.

I dream about parrots all the time. But that's because I'm a crazy parrot lady. That's what my husband tells me.
