If you have allergies, a tiel might not be the bird for you...

I don't even want to THINK about how many DUST MITES are on my tiel  Especially since I take huge sniffs of them constantly... they smell too good to resists haha

This is the baby busting his first puns but anyone with a tiel especially is familiar with being used as a powder puff lol.

I can second that. My time with my tiels is probably going to eventually come to an end. Right now its under control but I may eventually have to rehome them.

Dont think just because your allergies are minor it will be okay like I did. They can make even minor allergies worse.

The reason I own several birds including a cockatiel is because of my allergies. I am horribly allergic to cats (can't be in the same room) and moderately allergic to dogs (can't touch them). I do run a HEPA filter in the bird room as a precaution but never had an allergic reaction to birds so animal allergies are kind of hit and miss. I have owned birds on and off for several decades (mostly cockatiels because they are my absolute favorite bird). If I ever developed an allergy to birds I would be very sad because all I would have left in the pet world is maybe a hamster or some fish.

Oh yes I know it's not everyone, I just had to laugh at how much he was shedding!

Yeah, but they smell so good... like clean cotton that has been dried outdoors in the sun... to me, at least!

No 1. Reason I did not get a tiel. I have allergies, I don't want to be allergic to the bird. :( I'm mostly allergic to dust and very select laundry detergents.

This really makes it hard, trying to decide on a second bird! I had been thinking cockatiel. Also Amazon was way up on the list! Last week, when we had Bongo in the house with Joe Joe, during the hurricane, I couldn't believe how Joe Joe was so excited having another bird around it really makes me feel bad! When I take Jojo outside, he calls to every bird in the neighborhood!

Look at all those sheaths on that baby bird...! It can be fascinating to see young birds growing their mature feathers in. Baby can produce pin feathers here and there, mostly during rough molts. Since I got an air purifier, it works wonders. When it's on the lowest setting, it makes a nice calm wind sound.

The dust I've only notice when he "ruffles his feathers" and specs in the air. I'm now considering not having black furniture. Only because just in general, dust is just more noticeable. I haven't tried the Swiffer duster. I bet it would be handy.

I'd imagine the bigger birds pose more dander and bigger feathers. You can't help but to smell them. It's also what makes them so cuddly and soft. I loved my friend's galah and moluccan! Some people aren't able to have those specific birds with dander due to allergies and sadly, some even develop problems from having them. Other non-dander birds could also be prone to the dust which is why they could be in separate spaces.

I find having an air purifier, and multiple ones with more than one bird helpful. Although some don't have that option, unfortunately.

Have you thought about a caique, pionus or even another GCC?? I remember a few years ago I was at a bird store in the flea market...Everything Birds. I fell in love with the baby GCC. It wrapped its beak around my pointer as if it wanted food. It was so cute and I felt its tongue!

You know, Dani, you have a real talent for photography. You tend to wow me every time you put a picture up.

Yeah, but they smell so good... like clean cotton that has been dried outdoors in the sun... to me, at least!

Talk about drawing a vivid image! Hahaha! I love it, Abigail!

Yeah, I remember those days with my little dust-storm of a cockatiel! But he was worth every minute of necessary extra cleanup! (Of course, I didn't have allergies. Just speaking from the perspective of dealing with ubiquitous dust.)

The speed of light? Pfft! The true measure of ultimate speed should be the speed of 'tiel dust! You will find yourself saying, "COME ON! I literally just dusted that!" Hahaha!

Hahaha! That's hilarious! I always imagined cockatiels were quite dusty, but they must be especially full of it when they're just developing everything. I find with Shiko that instead of dust, I end up with random floofies everywhere... I don't know how many times someone has pulled his down out of my hair asking what it was and having to nonchalantly reply, "Oh, that's from my parrot". The looks you get! Though, that is admittedly better than someone pointing out poop on your shirt.

I don't want to hijack this thread! I love the three! But would have to pick a GCC from this choice! The other two don't always like sharing the playground!

We get adopters all the time who want a tiel because some of the other birds are too dusty... I try not to laugh at them directly... I swear the birds that produce the most dust, debris, tiny feathers, etc are the tiels and budgies. They produce way more dust then my bare eye cockatoo (tho I bathe her often to try to keep the dust as reasonable as possible).

But yep new version of tho she may be little, she is fierce (fiercely dusty!!).
