Rowdy -Blue and Gold Macaw (I miss him :''''(, ?-10/18/15)
Luna- cockatiel (deceased:'()
So i room rowdy out for the first time today and he wouldn't step into my arm, he just climbed up the cage. Eventually he got onto my arm (both forearms wrapped in towels and covered by a sweatshirt btw) but I had to block him from climbing up to my shoulder with my other arm. He didn't try to bite me once and I kept praising him and gave him a few peanuts. Then he jumped into the cage top again and I tried to get him to step up and he just kept lashing at my arms. I used the palm of my hand to push his beak back and it just made him madder. I also kept telling him no when he did it but he ignored me. I kept trying for at least 5 mins but when he latched onto my arm aggressively I pulled him off and dropped him to the floor. He yelped on the way down and scurried under the cage. I put a line of peanuts trying to coerce him out to get him back in the cage but he's only taking the ones nearest him. While I've been typing this he's been peaking out and he even stepped out on e but when I looked up at him he scurried back under. Did I just ruin all the progress I had made with him? & Mark if you see this and your daughter listens to her voice mail from me tell her I'm sorry I started crying at the end, I just don't know what to do now. Someone please help asap

OK, First calm down.

Get a towel and chase him out of hiding with it. once you have him in the open he should step up, if not, towel his butt and put him back in.

He will get over it!

Right now he is in control and you have lost the battle, you must win it back!

I'm trying to use a towel to scare him out but it's not working ugh s

Mines a tiel so with a Mac it may be different. I just toss it over them and pick him up towel and all. I had to towel Rex last night to return him to his cage for bedtime

Do you have to put him up right now? I would give him a chance to calm down and come out on his own.

Drop the towel over him and grab him by the neck from behind. Do not put pressure on his chest. You can lift him by the neck and put him away.

There is more to it but for what you need to do that is enough.

Once you have him out from under the cage and he see's the towel he will most likely make a bee line for the cage.

1. No. You didn't ruin the progress you were making. This is a macaw taking advantage...

2. You throw the towel over him. Then wrap it around him like a mummy. Then pick him up and set him down inside the cage.

3. Put your body in front of the door, cuz the minute you unwrap it he'll sprint for the door.

4. I assume you can just wheel the cage around? Wheel it out of the way, then gotcha with a towel...

5. If need be just close the door to the room and calmly wait him out.

But remain calm.

With macaws you have to think a move or two ahead, and out think them.

They will push you.

Okay will try that mark thanks he just runs right under though

You can lay the towel across a broomstick and get more reach to make him come out

Now it's a game of can't catch me... Nah, Nah.

Best way to win that game is to stop playing and just sit down on the floor.

See if he will come to you. Wait for him with a towel on your lap. And put the treats on the towel.

okay i got him out and back in, he kept biting me through the towel (although he was completely still when i first layed the towel over him. Mark i just dont know if i can have a big bird, i cant go through this with him everytime i take him out

Macaws are goofy, but they are smart as a whip too!. This week I had to get Zoe and she knew it too, so she went from shoulder to shoulder to clinging to the center of my back and when I slowly backed up to a wall she just flew off and led me on a merry chase as she flew around the house. She knew exactly what she was doing.

i just dont think he was the right choice for me. I want him to get better, i reakky do, but he's done the same thing both times

On cleaning days, when Maggie knows what's coming, she goes to the center of the cage, and laughs at me when I call her down.

We use two chairs, one on either side, when she decides to play that game.

Then, when you do pick her up, she'll do the beak on the door frame, like the old door to door salesman trick, of a foot in the doorway so you can't slam the door on them.

Biggest thing is to remain calm, and don't let it get to you.

You do kinda have to out think them sometimes.

It keeps you on your toes...

AND YOU'D BE SURPRISED HOW OFTEN YOU END UP SAYING TO YOURSELF - I WAS JUST OUTSMARTED BY A BIRD... !

- AGAIN!!!

And Maggie is a very well trained, well behaved bird. But even she does that stuff from time to time...

Animals, ALL kinds, take time and patience to train.

2 tries? That's nothing. It takes commitment. You have to take the time, have the patience, and the persistence to train and bond with the bird.

IMO, keep working with Mark, but more importantly, keep working with Rowdy.

Don't be scared, be firm, and consistent. Train. Show him love, and affection. Trust is earned.

You can do it.

Yeah, but it's only two times right?!

For a bird that's been caged and left unhandled for how long?!

WHAT DID YOU EXPECT?

It's not reasonable to believe this is a job that will take a matter of hours or days. It's more like weeks or months.

You have to be a little realistic here, and not get so easily frustrated.

You took on a bird that needs to re learn the basics, plus manners, plus simple step up, frankly, without actually knowing how to train one...

So, your learning curve is going to be steep as well.

Patience. Take your time. Stop being so hard on yourself and the bird.

IF YOU'RE UNWILLING TO DO THE WORK, YOU DON'T GET THE REWARD.

AGAIN, IT WOULD BE EASIER TO ADVISE YOU IF I COULD SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON, BUT I REALLY CAN'T. AND I'M WORKING RIGHT NOW...

Just a suggestion. BB tried this once with me. I sat away from the cage with a bowl of nuts. Started cracking and eating. YUM YUM GOOD STUFF> Out he came over to me just as sweet as you could ever want. FINE BB you want a nut step up. He did and with a beak full of nut he went into the cage no issue.

I had the same exact feeling when Gollum bit my ear the first day. I thought... OMG what have I done. Can I do this. Granted a sennie is no mac! I feel for you. I wish you all the luck and patience in the world! Just keep thinking how wonderful it will be if you stick with it. ;)
