So I was at the vegetable market this morning and my two favourite sellers didnt have their usual "weird stuff" above and beyond apples and bananas (like pomegranates, artichokes, etc) which Tachyon (Alexandrine parrot) absolutely loves I walked around the market 3 times before deciding that I would just buy something that looked like he would enjoy it (if it turned out to be parrot-safe of course!), take home and then ID/check parrot safety. If Tachyon couldnt/didnt eat them then my husband will have it for his lunch haha (poor man ends up eating lots of weird stuff left over from the parrot!).
There were bunches of something that looked like it would fit the bill: green/pink juicy stems with little fleshy leaves/buds, 30cm long, only $2 for a big bunch, looked fresh and tasty, ... turns out its Purslane (Pigweed!), it is parrot safe, and he LOVES IT. Hes been getting lazy in his vegetable foraging lately but here he is, sitting beside me, rippppppping through a cardboard tube to get to the purslane (and a fresh spring carrot + tops) in the middle. His beak is covered in smashed green leaves and hes even shoving his nose down the tube to reach more (he normally dosnt like anything around his head).
So. Pigweed for the win! Guess what I'm planting this afternoon?
A happy is a happy household!
