Pregnant!

Don't just eat junk food to gain weight! Stick with natural sources of nutrients so your body gets good stuff, not empty calories. That being said, I'm not saying to go low fat. you can find lots of natural foods that are higher in fat and other nutrients. Your baby is in the most intense growth period right now-the first trimester-all major organs and body systems are being worked on. Make sure you are getting lots of protien and iron to power your body to build the baby. I loved to do smoothies while pregnant-I could add yogurt for protein, my favorite fruits, and you can add veggies too -they blend right in and they taste wonderful with the fruit! Especially broccoli and spinach-I don't eat them very often normally but I will drink them in a smoothie. Best of all you can buy them frozen and when it's smoothie time, just yank a few bags of fruits and veggies out of the freezer, toss your favorite combo in the blender, add yogurt and/or milk and juice, and blend!

I had trouble with morning sickness and it really helped me to keep healthy high-protein snacks around. Almonds are super easy and yummy, but you can do trail mix, cheese sticks, beef jerky. When I got hungry my nausea was much, much worse. Try to make your grains whole grains-wheat bread, whole wheat crackers, etc.

I have had four kids and while I never had the problem of not gaining enough weight, I was very busy during my subsequent pregnancies and had to learn the best ways to eat to get nutrients when I was short on time but big on hunger. Now is a good time to listen to your body and let it tell you what it needs. If you are craving stuff like cheeseburgers and chicken, you know you need more protein. If you are craving fruit, go for it. Just make sure that you don't just eat junk food-make sure you pack those nutrients in there-you can add junk food on top of that.

It helps to make a food journal to see what food groups you are missing in your day and plan on adding in more of what you need in easy ways. Need more veggies? carrot sticks or bagged salads! When healthy eating is simplified, it gets done much easier. It would help to make a list of easy and doable foods in all the food groups so you can be mentally prepared to plan your eating.

Congrats!!! I always had the opposite problem gaining weight during pregnancy;) Just eat what sounds good to you and eat more of it, your body has a way of knowing what you need during pregnancy and your baby starts having opinions too! Good luck! I never enjoyed pregnancy until I knew I would never get pregnant again. So try to enjoy the good parts and forget the bad parts:)
