My bird is blue and gold macaw , he is nearly 11months old now. He is not weaned . I still feed him with formula because he doesn't eat by himself. I gave him a lot of fruit : kiwi, apples, banana ... He only chose banana, he just play with another things i give him. It's not enough nutrition for him if he only eat banana . He looks very terrible ,lost feathers... Help me with your advise. i dont have any expert around my country. I don't know what to do for him :(
Thank you very murch ! :d

Do you have an avian vet in your area? If you do I would get him in for a check over. I don't know much about how to wean birds, but you should do some research and either try to get him weaned yourself or find someone to help you.

Good luck!

What else are you giving him in addition to him eating the banana? Have you spoken to the breeder? Maybe they can help you.

Like SoCalWendy asks, what else are you feeding other the fruits??

Does your country sell pellets for parrots??? Soak pellets in water to give him. If there isn't pellets, offer parrot seeds for now as you can change it later once he starts to eat on his own. At his age he should be weaned already.

Your saying he's losing a lot of feathers, parrots do go through molt, He's reaching one year old and he's going through his first major molt. If you can, post pictures please. And please do consult your breeder and a avian vet!

How many times a day are you feeding him? Did he try eating pellets, soaked pellets or seeds? Try eating together with him, this helped me a lot! He will be curious what do you have on your plate and maybe come and eat it. Also follow the advices above. What do you mean by "lost his feathers" ? You mean like he is molting, or did he pluck them by force? My macaw is now 1 year old and is losing a lot of feathers cause of molting.

i feed him 2 times/ a day . And i still give him fruit in his cage , like i said , he only eat banana and he just play with another fruit or food. Thank you ! i will try it . How old does your bird can eat by itself. I'm so worry about mine :(

Definitely try soaking pellets - and eating with him, my Macaw does not eat normal pellets, just soaked ones. She weaned at about 5-6 months, at that time she was eating only banana too, but then she also started to eat apple, grapes and other good stuff.

You could also do what I did with the pellets for him to get to like the taste - I crushed the pellets to dust and add water like you would when making formula. She liked that very much !

Just keep us informed how are you doing with your boy :) He will eventually wean, dont worry ! Some macaws just take more time to wean.

How much does your macaw weigh? Can you post a picture of him, please?

Johnny is spot on. Eat WITH him. Show him how good it is. Make a big fuss over how yummy things taste, and he will soon enough develop an appetite.

I would still strongly recommend you find a veterinarian who has parrot knowledge so he can get a good physical checkup to rule out underlying problems. :)

He neds to be seen immediately by an Avian vet ir at keast contact where he was bought and ask them to look at him and help, you cannot wait.

Also try nuts even if broken up. Macaws require a higher fat content in their diet from what I am told. Sweet potatoe mine loves a,so as well as pasta, etc

The way I did introduce new foods to my birds is from my mouth. After all I am the parent , at least that's how bird thinks and he wants to eat whatever you eating. Try that approach.

It is advised not to feed from mouth! Germs from your mouth is not healthy for birds!

i trying :( . i will try to eat him as many as i can . Thank you . How can i weigh him ? He always run and fly away when i try to weigh him

crush the pellets into dust and mix them with water as if you're preparing the formula
then feed him. he'll acquire the taste (and the nutrients) and then he'll probably start
eating the pellets himself. keep offering him fresh fruits and veggies as well and you
might see him starting to eat them after he learns how to eat properly.
