I currently own an Indian Ringneck named Chloe, two budgies and a baby yellow cockatiel I'm handfeeding named Sunshine!
So I haven't even had my little baby cockatiel, Sunshine, for a week yet and she's sick. I have been worried, the breeder said she was ten weeks but I thought she was younger because of her sitting so low, difficulty perching and she doesn't peck. She always seemed hungry, crying, even after a feeding (handfeeding). I woke up this morning and she wouldn't even hold herself up. She wouldn't eat and she's normally Starving! Her eyes would barely open. So, she's at the avian vet, who is taking her home with her, she's gonna feed my baby every two hours. $400.00 for her overnight care. Apparently she's been sick for quite some time. Sunshine has a bad yeast infection and she wasn't digesting any of her food which explains alot. And, hindsight being what it is, I'm so Angry! The breeder, who had hundreds of different animals in her garage, must've known she was sick. She gave me a $10 discount because she Liked me, only after i picked Sunshine, and sunshine was in a cage all by herself, as opposed to all the other cages which were filled with birds. Not only that, at ten weeks, a breeder surely knows that this bird wasn't well. I'm just Angry and I don't know what to do with my feelings. Now, does anyone know if yeast infections are contageous? Do I need to worry bout my budgies and Indian Ringneck getting ill? The vet says Sunshine is fighting so hard for her life, she stands a chance. I've cried all day and am beside myself, probably because since Sunshine was sick, she's been so cuddly and I feel more bonded to her than I ever have an animal. Sorry it's so long, but I know all of y'all are bird lovers, you'll understand and not be secretly thinking, It's Only A Bird...

I am so sorry that Sunshine is so sick. I agree that the breeder had to have known that she was sick as well.
What did you vet say about the danger of your other birds contracting this?
I am so glad that the vet has taken her home to care for her tonight, and am sending prayers and wishes for a speedy and complete recovery. Nope, you will never hear "it's only a bird" from us:)

thanks so much. I honestly wasn't even thinking about my other birds, didn't dawn on me to ask if I should treat them or something. I've been so focused on the baby. I will have to remember when I pick her up tomorrow afternoon. Thanks so much for the prayers, it's so nice to have someone understand.

Oh my goodness! I am so very sorry to hear about your Sunshine. :( Prayers, good vibes, good wishes and HUGS coming your way!!

Firstly, any reputable breeder should not sell unweaned babies. Even if you have experience I find it very unprofessional and clearly they are just out to make a quick buck. Secondly, if the conditions weren't the best where you got her, I suggest you report the breeder to animal control. Have you contacted the breeder of the situation? I'm not sure if yeast infections are contagious or not but your vet should be able to tell you that. With any new bird you should definitely keep them in a separate room from your other birds for atleast 30 days just as a precaution. Do you have a photo of sunshine? It's very likely she was not 10 weeks old and some babies can take up to 12 weeks to be fully weaned. I hope the baby makes a full recovery, thankfully you are giving her a better chance at life.

Please keep us updated about your baby, and I am also praying that your other birds will be fine. My heart is breaking for you, but Sunshine sounds like a little fighter and that is so important!

I've heard of some tiels who don't even wean until they are 15+ weeks old.... and even if they are weaned at an earlier age, it is possible for them to regress.

It is possible that she wasn't sick when you picked her up but due to the stress of moving, it caused her immune system to fail and she got sick that way. (just a possibility - maybe she really was sick from the breeders!)

So sorry you are having to go through this! Although it is possible for your other birds to get sick as well, if they are healthy then they are less likely to get sick... especially if kept separated from Sunshine.

I'm so sorry to hear she's sick, but I am VERY glad to hear you recognized the seriousness of the situation and have her under professional vet care where she needs to be. Thanks to your diligence, Sunshine now has the best possible chance and being cared for by a competent vet, I am sure she will start improving soon:)

Poor baby though. Hearing about the breeder, they probably did know. I am unsure in baby birds (everything is a little more complicated in babies) but from my understanding yeast infections can be treated fairly well in adults. When you speak to the vet tomorrow, be sure to ask about the risks to your other birds, symptoms to watch for, sterilization measures and if any preventative action needs to be taken for your other birds. Best of luck, and I'm hoping for good news tomorrow on Sunshine!

I have babies that are 13-14 weeks old and the oldest at 14 weeks old still isn't 100% weaned but the two younger ones have been weaned for 3 weeks. Very stubborn first born lol ;)

Sending love and prayers your way! Hope she gets better soon. I'm glad she is in good hands.

Very Very Sorry Sunshine is sick :(

EVERYONE here will share this with you and be here to help you see this through

We all have had our share of pain from our feathered loved ones, You are not alone

Sending prayers and BEST Vibes Your way

Joe

What a poor bird :( Luckily, The vet should take good care of your struggling baby :)
This could be possible but there is a small chance your little baby should go under surgery. but don't panic, I hope this won't happen. :)

Oh I'm so sorry!

I hope Sunshine makes a speedy recovery!

Do ask your vet about yeast infections. I'm not sure of their contagious, but in healthy birds it should be unlikely.

Sending best of thoughts!

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to reply, she didn't make it thru the night and I've been just Devestated. The vet took her home with her for the night and I got the call around two in the morning. I'm so angry that she was sold to me but at the same time, I'm glad she didn't die alone in that garage. I know she went with a full belly, sitting on a heating pad, as comfortable as possible. That gives me some comfort.
I meant to check back here but I've been too upset. I guess because she was so sick, she was so loving and I bonded to her like I couldn't believe. Funny how these tiny little animals find their way in to our hearts like they do.
No, I haven't confronted the breeder yet, I am planning on it, though. Like I said, I'm positive she knew Sunshine was sick. I would love to report her, someone mentioned it, who can I report her to? Gosh, I'd do just about anything to keep any of her other birds, any of her animals, from suffering the same fate. Let alone the animal lovers buying these animals and becoming heart broken as I am tonight.
I've decided to buy a Baby Indian Ringneck tomorrow, hoping that it'll help heal my broken heart. Yes, this is an older baby, already fully weaned, with a clean bill of health from an avian vet. We already have one ringneck, so I kinda know about the breed.
thanks to all who've sent me support, its nice to know there are a group of people who can support you when you need it, who love what you love.and prayers Always help.

I am so sorry for your loss of Sunshine. She passed knowing she was cared for.

I wish you the best of luck with your new ringneck and the rest of your flock.

I am so sorry for your loss of poor Sunshine:( I am so glad she was in a safe place at the end and that she had a chance to know love.
I'm glad you are getting a new baby tomorrow and I hope it helps heal your heart a bit.
As for reporting the breeder, you could ask your vet who helped you with Sunshine if she has any recommendations on who would be best to report it to.
Sending hugs your way this evening.

So sorry, I know from first hand experience just how devastating the loss can be, even if you have had them only for a short period of time
