TRUST. It may take even years for that to happen, but if you truly want the bird to be 'nice' you need to show him that you are a good person who will be his friend and protector. He needs to learn to trust you, don't force anything. I recommend watching Barbara Heidenreichs DVD 'The basics of parrot training - a live workshop'.
