The Rickeybird, 40-year-old Patagonian Conure
A source that's based on actual statistics collected by an avian vet who has 30 years' experience, clinics in several states, and therefore a lot of birds weighed, provides this reference for American-kept companion birds.
I can say that it definitely is consistent with the Rb. It says the average is 232 grams, and he weighs 233, which my vet said was fine.

Thank you for the link, Abigail! Very interesting reading. And The Rickeybird's weight does fall easily within the range he has listed as the average weight for a Patagonian conure.

There are, of course, lots of variables to be considered. Some birds, even within the same sub-species, simply have a larger frame than others. But it does provide something of a guideline with which to work.

Lumping all of the ekkies into the same category does affect those results, though. A 500+ gram Vosmaeri would appear to be beyond the average acceptable range, but for many of the larger Vos that would be a really good weight. Not so much for a Solomon Island ekkie, however.

Still, all in all quite interesting. Thanks again.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH, thanks for knowing/catching that!

I initially ran into all kinds of online confusion with the various subspecies of Patagonians, and the above site made me happy, but... clearly, the site has its own limits.

Thank goodness for the checks and balances and Super Moderators here! :)

I've seen this many times before, and I always appreciated it. But I've come to realize those ranges are bunk. He did nothing other than say "what's 20% lower and 20% higher than the average". What they needed to do was provide the actual range of weights they measured. This 20% around the average is nonesense.

Yellow shoulder Amazons are never on these lists, I don't know why I bother to look at them. Salty was 289 the other day...... is that high, low? Who knows.

Our DYH Amazon is slightly smaller than those I have around us, but he sets in at a bit above /below 500 g. And that is on the upper side of this scale. Our guy is an active flier and has the chest muscle mass to prove it. Long story short, I would have guess that the average would have been a bit heavier. Well as stated, its based on his client base.

That was one big B&G MAC!!!

I was shocked to see that Patagonians were on there!
And the Rb is one gram over the average he provided (232).
I needed that after just discovering his secret barbering hobby.
