Ozzie - alexandrine parakeet
Ozzie's aviator harness has arrived! It's a size small, coloured blue. I brought it from the parrot university website for $35 (USD). It's time to start training! I hope he likes the harness. I put the harness on the table, and Ozzie actually climbed down from his cage to check it out! :green2:

If you have any tips on harness training, I would love to know! :p

Here's a pic of the harness

Let me know how you go! I've been looking at these for a long time =) GL with training.

Josie LOVES hers. It took me less than 5 minutes to get her into it and at least 20 to get it off of her. I made sure she associated it with going outside. The first time I put it one her, I used her favorite treat and held it in the middle of the neck loop so she would have to put her head thru to get it. Once your bird gets the neck part on, the rest is a breeze. One thing that I would suggest is to make sure your bird is in a place where it can't run away while you are putting it on. Josie actually runs when she knows its coming off now. When she sees it, she knows she is going bye bye so she is no trouble at all. Good luck! It is well worth the effort. Enjoy.

I have the exact same harness except it's black. Beaker hates it. He fidgets non-stop when it's on. I don't think he'll ever like it. Take a bottle of water with you when you take him outside in the summertime in case your bird starts panting from the heat.

Is it the aviator? How does Rosie goes with her harness? :)
Do you mean how she wears it or how I got her to wear it? I originally used the feather tether, which sucks, so transferring to the aviator harness was easy. It's very light while the feather tether was bulky and heavy.

As for how she wears it, if we are walking around I have it on like normal. I tighten it until I can easily fit two fingers between the harness and her body. For the two(so far) times I took her to the park to work on flight and recall training I loosen it as I worry about her bald back chaffing and so she has extra breathing room while breathing harder then normal.

Here's some pics of her wearing hers

you can see how it is looser then normal

Her harness is attached to a 100ft sturdy light rope while at the park, my friend is about to pick her up in this image.

Highest she's ever flown(this was taken seconds after the first image) a gust of wind blew her straight up and away. Also those trees are well out of range.

I can put a harness on my Alex, but once it's on he struggles horribly. He fights it and flies and crashes once he's reached the end of the string. The last time I attempted he did this for over an hour. After that he was breathing heavily and half closing his eyes like he was gonna pass out. He also freaked out so much when I tried to take the harness off I ended up cutting it off him.

To this day he still will target into a harness just fine, let me put the rest on, then five seconds later go into freak out mode. I probably won't ever get a harness on him, and if he struggles like that I think the parrot jesses would just break his legs. I take him outside in a bird pak, but it makes me sad he can't fly outside.

hi, please can you let me know how the aviator harness fits on ozzie and how it sits.

i bought the feather teather in small for oxy, he allows me tp put it on him and quite enjiys going outside but it is quite bulky on his small frame and he spends most of the time chewing on it.

copperarabian, you mentioned you attach extra rope to Rosies harness. what type is it? i have considered attatching some braided fishing line to oxy's. its strong and extremely light, although it wont be needed atm as oxy chewed through the screen on his bedroom bedroom and escsped for the second time and then when we tried to get him he flew off. i have now had him trimmed (he can still fly, just not far or fast) and going to spend more time working on recall training.
this is a pic of oxy in his harness, it is quite loose in this pic as it was the first day i had gotten it and hadnt adjusted it yet.

I got it from the parrot university website, it cost $35 (USD), with free shipping world wide. Alexandrine fits the small size, it's for parrot from 190-425 grams.

Hope this helped :)

Wow, Ozzie is learning faster than I thought! He will now let my touch him with the harness, the longest so far is 30 second, I take it off before Ozzie starts to get angry.

Sorry about the quality of the picture, it's hard trying to take a photo while puting a harness on a parrot and trying to reward it. :D
