Outdoor Aviary

I am going to be building an outdoor aviary for my cockatiel Kalypso. Do yall think I could keep diamond doves in the aviary full time and let my 'tiel fly in their just a couple hours a day?

I have zero dove knowledge, but I am assuming they are pretty chill and would not hurt her or be territorial about this? I should say, I assume you will research the species compatibility issue before proceeding, right? assuming the doves are cool with it it should be fine as long as your tiel also tolerates them, but what will you do if something goes wrong? Will you rehome the doves? Build a second aviary? Not let her fly? You need to have this answer before acting. Also, be sure you are getting the doves because you really want them not just because you want your aviary to look cool.

Of course, be sure to build a safety door and always transport the bird in a carrier or on a harness for safety

Although a 'tiel & the doves are about the same size, you are not going to be able to answer your question until you have the birds, have introduced them and observed how they interact among themselves.....once you've answered the interaction questions, you will also have answered your question of time together.....

If something were to go wrong I wouldnt rehome the doves. My tiel would get a new aviary eventually. I am not getting doves to make it look "cool", I am very interested to own doves. I thought I would have to wait I was just wondering if anybody had expierence with this.

Diamond doves are cute little things. I don't know anything about doves. I've seen them in mixed aviaries, so they must be gentle. I've also seen Cockatiels in mixed aviaries. At the county fair every year there is an aviary judging contest and many of the aviaries have Cockatiels mixed with other kinds of birds in there. Good luck.

My friend owned about 6 ringneck doves once upon a time. Very lovely and kind birds, but they definitely need their time to fly around. We used to take them out and fly them around the house and they loved it! And they were never aggressive with us, and rarely each other. My friend had raised the parents and helped the parents raise some eggs, and I know little about them personally.

But I think so long as the doves don't become aggressive if they choose to sit on eggs or anything along those line that Kalypso should be fine to fly in with them. You'll just have to try and monitor their interactions, and likely have to supervise them for the first while that you plan to do it.

Diamond doves are very small and very inoffensive. I doubt the cockatiel would take much notice of them. I have kept a free-range dove in my house along with a Galah and a budgie and they got along just fine. The parrots never registered the dove was there!

So long as there's 'a box' and 'a perch' per bird or pair of birds, I can't imagine any problem with what you want to do. Diamond doves need plenty of space to forage on the ground and access to water on the ground as well. If you give green forage (grass, veggies etc), then make sure to spread it about so it doesn't become an item for competition between the species.

I wasnt planning on breeding. I was just planning on giving some unwanted doves a home. Do I need to worry about breeding between two diffrent species like a ring neck and a diamond dove?
