Our GW is not doing well :(

GW Macaw, CAG, eclectus (Kiwi- RIP)
We’ve noticed our GW was more lethargic today. We also noticed that she spent more time sitting inside her cage when usually she would be out and about, banging her toys around and making noise. We’ve also noticed that she was often closing her eyelids halfway and seemed overly calm. She ate her fresh fruits but seemed to have more difficulty and less strength in cracking a walnut.

We didn’t take any chances and took her to a reputable avian vet tonight.
A physical checkup didn’t reveal any problems until the blood work results came back. They found that her white blood cells were very high - must be fighting an infection of some sort. They will keep her under observation for 48 hours and give her antibiotic shots.

The vet didn’t promise anything and couldn’t tell us if she would pull out ok but she said that we did the right thing in bringing her right away.

We are truly hoping everything will turn out well...we miss her so much already.

I'm sorry to read this but am strongly rooting for a quick recovery! Sending healing vibes her way!

I'm sorry your girl is sick, I hope it's nothing too serious and she recovers quickly. Please keep us updated.

Praying for a good outcome for your girl. I'm sure you're scared. Update us tomorrow, please.

Oh no!! I'm so sorry to see this!! :(

I truly hope she makes a quick recovery!! Good thing you took her in right away!!

My flock is praying for yours. I'm sorry to hear. I'll keep my eye on this thread for updates.

Wow. I'm really sorry to hear that. I know you must be worried sick right now. It's really good that you acted so swiftly. You've given her a fighting chance.

And 2 days of having antibiotics injected directly into her system will definitely help her to rally. I'm hoping the best for her and your family.

Just spoke to the vet and she told me that she is making a little bit of progress. She is kept in an incubator to keep her from loosing energy trying to keep warm. She has eaten some grapes and almonds...which is a good sign and she didn’t need to be force fed.

She slept all the way through the morning but was beginning to interact with the staff a bit more in the afternoon. She will remain at the vet for another day and will receive three more antibiotic shots. If she is well enough, I am scheduled to pick her up tomorrow night and will continue to give her oral antibiotics over the next few days.

She’s not out of the woods yet but the vet told me that things are going as expected. She is a very experienced vet to I put my trust in her.

God, I hope she’ll be fine! I never thought I’d miss her screaming that much!

Hi that's good news. Are you gonna be okay with giving her the oral antibiotics - have you done this before?

I'm so glad she's showing signs of progress. Grapes for water content and almonds to build her up. A good combination if she hasn't been eating and drinking much. Sounds like your vet knows her business.

We're all pulling for her over here.

So sorry to hear you are going through this... hope she continues to improve and you can bring her home tomorrow.

Hopefully so. The vet has also made arrangements with an emergency animal hospital I could bring her to so that she can get additional antibio shots over the long weekend, if need be.

Never done this before but if anyone has any tips, I’m all ears.

From what I know, I need to soak up a piece of bread with the antibio or mix it with something she loves like peanut butter, some oatmeal or a small amount of yogurt.

You could try holding the dropper up to her mouth and see if she will take it that way first. She might surprise you. When I'd done it, I always made sure to give the dose before meals. If her appetite has improved, doing so could help.

But failing that, yes, those alternate techniques could work.
