I'm so happy for Sam! He's gonna love the new palace! He has room for all kinds of fun toys and perches now! :)

So, the door from the small cage is open to the door of the big cage. 3 toys have been moved, and his swing. There is an apple hanging from his new home perch, and all his favorite foods in 2 dishes on a raised platform so he can see them.
He does not want to relocate in over 6 hours. Probably a security issue I guess.I think I will put the old cage inside the new cage tomorrow if he hasnt budged.

Be patient, he may need more time to be secure. Give him a chance to climb around on the top of it. As anxious as we all are to see him in his new palace, he will probably enjoy it more if you let him do it on his terms.

I went ahead and put the little cage inside the big cage. Now he can do as he pleases at his pace.
I guess I need a tent-sized new cover.

Sam was very hesitant to leave the security of his little cage, even inside the big cage.
Mom is also very set in her "cage of ideas" ,thought the new cage was " horrible",was angry at me ,and wanted it out of her house.

The new cage came with 6' deep metal barrier to place around the base . I used one of these to take up space in his little cage. That got him out the door. Now he is happily sitting on top of the little cage inside the big cage.

Change can be difficult. For birds and people.

Definitely, my granny is 91. I am the only female relative in the area, so I catch it more than most. My mother is out of state & calling for me to buy an air conditioner & take it to my granny's. I dont mind, but the last air conditioner we installed, she called a man to remove from her home. She has moved to a trailer & the temps are really unbearable. There are 18 (really 18) fans in various positions in the trailer & being there w/them running is deafening. I talked to her about the ac & she was adament, no air conditioner. We have a lady who cooks & cleans for her, & I'm afraid she will find better employment, because of the heat. My mother keeps calling, but I'm between a rock (my mom) & a hard place (my granny). She doesn't want to give up as queen bee of her home, (I get that) but there are other people involved now. (she doesn't get that). w/the current situation, I can make 66% of everyone happy, me, my mom & my granny. I'm going w/the get the air conditioner, moms happy, I'm happy, she's not calling me 4 times a day, & granny's unhappy. Granny can choose to not use it, but it will be ready to use.

Enough gripping about me, you are happy, Sam will be happy, & your mom being resillent (she is 95) will find a way to be happy. You have my 66%. You did a good thing, it will work out.

The older generation doesn't like air condition. To them that is a modern convenience they are used to living without. I would just let her be, even if she has a million fans running.

Sam has had the best days of his life. The little cage is in the big cage. It gives him some security I guess. I may just leave it there.
He can go in and out as he pleases. He has gotten 10x as much exercise. He still has only explored about 2/3 of the big cage..the door is always open, but he doesnt seem to want to go out.

I took a lot of abuse for 2-3 days from mom,but she has settled down, and she can pet him way more easily than before.

You know how some of you said the little cage was "horrible".(you were right of course)
Well, that's what she said about the big cage.I did make her read this thread, and that helped.

And,if my English setter ever visits,Sam is much safer in this big very well built fort which could not be knocked over.

I'm so happy to hear that, I was thinking about him. You let your mom read this, oh no! lol I tease my granny like that but I don't know your mom. Tell her it was all fun. I bet Sam is grateful, keep us posted.

Sam is doing well.I left his old small cage inside the new big one,and he has the best of both.He spends most of the day on top of the small cage, but goes inside it at night. The door of the big cage is left open, but he has not gone outside of that or tried to fly.

I should probably start a new thread about my mom feeding him granola bars.Somehow it seems they are not part of his natural diet. Will that kind of processed junk sugar harm him?

Well the sugar is not good for him that is for sure. Read the other ingredients & see what else is in them. I don't eat or have granola bars here to read the ingredients. You could bring over some bags of raw unsalted, nuts for him for treats. Is he on pellets for his main diet? My Yellow Nape likes almonds in the shell & she cracks them & eats them. It gives her something to do for a few minutes. I just give them once in a while for a treat, she is mainly on a 4 pellet mixture (Harrisons, Zupreem, Roudybush & Scenic) for her main diet, (as no 1 pellet is perfect). I switched her to that from solely sunflower seeds that she was eating when I got her. The vet said that she was overweight when I got her. I also give her fresh fruit & veg & some table food, 'tho she is not very adventurous about trying new table foods or fruit & veg so far after being on solely sunflower seeds previously. That was great of you to get him the larger cage.

I've always heard that you should always get the biggest you can afford at the time. Yep, the bigger the cage, the more toys we get to buy. Spoiled, Spoiled, Spoiled.

No offense but I really feel certainly sorry for that guy. There is, from what I can see, just one toy in that tiny cage.
