Older amazon needs a clip

Monica, looks great! Zeke is a LONG ways away from being a harness model like Charlie and part of me doubts it will ever happen. Why would it need to? You're right though, he is easy to get back in the cage and nothing has happened "yet." If I had a million dollars lying around I'd build a huge indoor aviary and let him spend the rest of his days in there, a sanctuary situation. I adopted him because he had been at the rescue for a long time - on the lower level of their set up in a very dark place. He struck me then as a gentle bird with really deep hurts. I studied in South America during my undergrad years and we spent our honeymoon at a national reserve in Peru - I feel a lot for what parrots went through to get here to NORTH DAKOTA. Those birds were stolen in very cruel ways from their homes - Zeke is missing a toe from his ride to the States - and this is really about making him more comfortable than me. So anyways if he just needs space and time for the rest of his life then so be it. My other birds love to do the things I ask of them and are happy doing them (for the most part!!). Well I'm going to let him out of his cage now and get back to work. :) Maybe look into large custom cages later on tonight...

BTW - how do you post a photo here without needing a URL? Can't I just upload a jpg somehow? I'm using Chrome.

I usually post images with image shack. I don't think it cost. Pretty easy. You might be able to post them on your gallery and then use them in a post.

Wanted to expand on my last post... if a parrot is actively attacking people or other animals, or is a danger to themselves, then yes, I would say it is advisable to clip. That said, even flighted parrots can be taught not to attack people or animals they don't like. It requires stationing them and teaching them to ignore that which they do not like.

This amazon, although he can't be handled well at the moment, is showing that he does enjoy human interaction. He's showing it by his desire to fly to his human, and it would be a shame to clip him simply because he can fly. If there was a valid reason to clip him, I'd say yes, but there really isn't at this point in time.

So in reality, how amazing would it be if this amazon decided on his own that he wanted physical human interaction? He's still learning to trust, but his desire for humans is already evident without the need to clip.

slowstitcher, I honestly think you are doing fine! It would help to try and figure out some favorite treats of his or perhaps eat meals with him, but otherwise, he just needs some time! I know it's been a few months already, but then you can't always expect instant success with an older bird with an unknown history.

You can upload photos to image hosting websites such as Photobucket or Flickr, or if you go under Advanced options, there is a Paperclip that you can click on and upload images directly to the forum. The photos I posted are from Photobucket and Facebook, but I also have Flickr.

When you are creating your post, go into attachments, click on upload from Computer, then browse.. click on the pic you want to show, then click on upload.... or if you have photobucket just hover mouse over the image then left click on IMG and it will say copied, then just paste into your message box, go onto preview post and it will show if it has gone in properly:)

Yes, clipping is a personal choice and only you know what is right for your fid. For me, I don't clip my Amazon's wings. one, she doesn't need it she is well behaved and does not fly around, nor does she go outside unless she is tethered or in a travel carrier. And, I just can't bring myself to clip those beautiful multicolored feathers. I save all her molted feathers. But that is me, and it is a decision I made after getting her as she came clipped from the breeder. So it was a decision I made based on my particular situation. I would not tell you to not clip or to definitely clip, but to consider whichever decision you make very carefully. If at some point you decide to clip then change your mind.... of course the feathers grow back. It sounds like you have a great companion.
