Hopefully you have heard this a million times but I got a parakeet yesterday and it has not made a sound, eaten, drank, moved really. It does allow me to pet it and I have had it on my finger. In the cage. I have also tried apples and bananas. No go.

Try offering some millet seed. The smaller birds go nuts for them.
It's not unusual for a new brought-home bird to bee quiet, it's been through a lot.
If it doesn't start eating by tomorrow you should take it to an avian certified vet quick as you can.
You should take it to a vet in any case just for a baseline.

I would stop trying to touch it-- it is probably really scared and overwhelmed. Just build trust by talking quietly around the cage, and interacting somewhat indirectly. Move slowly...even though he allows you to touch him, it is probably because he is really freaked out and in a bit of shock.
How old is the bird and where did you get it?
Birds can't go long without eating and drinking---even though a trip to the vet will cause further stress on an already potentially stressed bird, you will need to get it in if things don't change (still may be shocked by the transition, but it has to eat and drink).

I'd start by feeding whatever was fed at the shop, for now...

And...
From our Budgie Whisperer reeb (thanks, reebsie!).

In my opinion, any of the vets listed here should be better than a regular vet.

Agreed!!! give it some time dont overdo what your doing atm let him rest for a few days !

Thank you all. Today I took almost all of the toys out. I had it stuffed with everything that came with it. The bird immediately started to eat, drink and chirp. Wshew. So while I obviously am no expert, my experience taught me that at first just a few simple toys besides the food, mullet and water is best.
Again. Thanks to all who replied.
