I just purchased a macaw .(the owner was passing away with cancer) I have a few questions. He 21 yo and has had same owner all his life.
I owned a macaw for many years till I lost him to cancer.
This bird is a very good bird she brought him in my house I took him from her and stared walking him around and she was amazed, he took to me instantly. The thing that puzzles me is I try to take him to sit with me and he rocks back and forth until I take him back to his cage. Is that normal?
He talks almost constantly not sure why. will that slow down?
Ok so it's only been 4 days but I was just wondering what someone with more experience thought?

Welcome and be welcomed. Congrats on the new pal.
I have found that nothing a parrot does in the first few weeks should be considered permanent. Especially with a bird of 21 yrs with the same owner. Patience is the word of the day and for many days to come.

Thx 4 reply. I raised the other b&g from a baby.
I think the fact that this bird will step and talks means he feels comfortable???

Yes I think this says a lot too. Keep working at his pace.

thx for your reply.
Ok he has been with us a week. when we got him, he was very loud talking. now he still talks (a lot) but is already starting to tone it down. he would just stay with me but now he will go from me to my wife which I think is amazing.

The thing that still puzzles me is when he sits with me, he is very good but rocks back and forth from one foot to the other. any ideas why?

Personally My Take Is He Feels Comfortable With You. At Least this is What I Hope For You. It is a Great thing You've Helped Both the Owner Who Hopefully Will be Less Worried About Part of the Family, & You've Helped the Parrot. I Am Surprised that after 21 Years the Parrots been So Calm, But Here's Hoping It Continues to Work, For All Of You.

Are you still in touch with the previous owner or have they passed already? I would ask if this is something that he has always done and am thinking it is something to self sooth. It is still a new environment and he might feel more comfortable doing this.

previous owner is still in touch. she says he is dancing. i have seen him dance and the rocking back and forth is not it. he rocks back and forth talking or screaming. (not real loud). but to be fair he is 21 yo
and I have no idea what he has been thru. today was the first time he bit me so not bad.

If she is calling it dancing, it could really be the same movement and something that he as always done so just consider it one of the things he does and don't be concerned. He sounds like he is feeling at home so that is good. Sorry about the bite but if it did not need stitches, you both are good as we know there will always be bites, it is the severity that is of concern. Sounds like he really is a keeper so be grateful.

He was grabbing his tail feathers and was just very unsettled today, which of the 2 weeks I've know him was not normal. I think he may have bit me because he is hormonal. What do you think?

I have spent about $300 on food and today was the first time I found something he like, Zupreem fruit blend.
This has been an adventure. he loves to talk and has a very large vocabulary of which I'm not used to. my other bird I raised from a baby, and he was very chill, but I do have to admit my bird would bite you to the bone in a heartbeat. So 2 weeks in and 1 bite I think we are doing good. I hope he settles down on talking, but he is a very good bird.
