Hi. i am new "parent" of a young sun conure. its sweet but i am confused that it's male or female ? the person who sold me this parrot, said that it's male and its 2 years old and old enough for breeding. i was thinking to buy a female partner for him as if mine one is male. but i am not sure about his sex. i was reading in article for sex determination but its painful like operation or DNA. i am not in favor for any painful experiment to check my parrot's sex. is there any painless procedure to check his sex ? without cut or injection or pain? i wanted to know more about their behavior etc. so friends please keep posting your valuable info so we can take a very good care of our beloved parrot.....and i call him radhey.....and he response.....amazing yeah !!:red:

and welcome to the forum:)

Avian biotech is a great place to get them DNA tested. They send you a kit and you pull a couple of their chest feathers and send them off. Dont worry, this does not hurt them! I done it recently to have my Amazon DNA tested... It took me 3 days to pluck up the courage to get the feathers, but once I did, I then realised it did not hurt him at all:)

Avian biotech is great. You can also have it done when your conure gets it's first check up, the vet will be taking blood anyway.

Also, please do a lot of research before you consider breeding. It's a lot of work and money. Don't just breed because you can.

hi! both my birds were DNA sexed as well, the vet did it by taking a few feathers (like the Avian biotech kit) you can also use surgical sexing, but that is very invasive (and in my opinion) not necessary.

Do keep in mind that if you want to get a second bird with the intent on keeping the first one company, is not always the right thing to do for pet birds. often more than not you end up having to give double the intention, or worse, they may become agressive towards you if not giving enough attention and if the bond together.

If it's for breeding purposes, that's another stroy of course :)
