Re: New Members (I'm new too)

I just adopted 2 B&G Macaws, therefore any help, any time would be great.
One is named Pumpkin and the other is Ruffles, they came to me with those names. I'd like to change them, however; they seem to know those names so I guess I won't change them.
I rescued them, so I have a lot of work to do. Anything on that would be appreciated.

Hi I'm Coral and my pionus parrot Marty is 4 years old. We met about 3 weeks ago i found him on craigslist and fell in love with him. Hes kind of a meany to everyone but me. I'm trying to make him less aggressive so far its not going very well. :\ But being patient is important with birds. Hes not eating a lot of fruits or veggies like hes supposed to but i'm trying to get him to try new things. Marty was sick when i got him and i didn't know. I took him to the vet for a check up and they listened to his chest and said he had an upper respiratory infection then when they checked his poop they said his bacteria was 100% bad. He's on medicine and is going back to the vet next week. Hopefully when he feels better he'll try more foods? If anyone has any tricks to get him to try something new let me know. :) His favorites are carrots, almonds and peanuts. He eats his pellets pretty well and has a UV light on 12 hours a day like his vet said.

i think its hard to use to lol i just found it like 30 minutes ago >.>

Thank you for taking in this needy bird. I am sure he will get well and feel comfortable in your care.

Hello to you all. My husband and I recently adopted an African Grey, she is 24 years old. We’ve had her for 6 weeks. She has spent all her life in pubs. The last being our local where we got to know Blue over the 18 months she was there. The land lady did her best but couldn’t give her enough time – her cage was in the pub all the time. She has been a plucker for years; she has no feathers on her chest, legs, back and the top of her wings.
She bit me the first day I tried to take her bowls out of her cage. I have solved this problem with a new cage with swingout doors J I am still a bit scared – once bitten twice shy, and what is that saying..Don’t bite the hand that feeds you! LOL. Well anyway, she has found love in my husband; she has never bitten him, sits on his shoulder etc. This could be the first love she has had in a long time – she wasn’t treated very well by previous owners, so I have heard.
I have changed her diet, new toys in her cage with several perches. She even has a river view with mud banks where other birds gather and a tree. I have been doing a lot of research and want to look after her the best way we can. I know she is happy with us, possibly the happiest she has been in years! She is our baby now.
I am interested in sharing knowledge and experience with people who understand how sensitive these birds can be, hence me being here today. :)

Welcome BG. Greys are such unique birds. They seem to grow deeper in your heart and soul as time passes. Sounds like your guy is having a wonderful life now.

Thank you Spiritbird. She has stolen my heart already. I just wish she loved me as much as I do her hehe. She will learn, I hope :D

We eat our breakfast & dinner together, she love that. She is very good really, I know she can be a very loving bird but only with my husband at the moment.

I never realised how much they need us. I am worried now because we have a one week holiday booked in March. My brother in law will go round & feed her but he wont let her out because he attacked him the first week we had her. It was bad & I am not kidding. She hid under the coffee table, ran up his legs & lunged at his face, blood everywhere. She has settled down a lot but still stalks him. I know she will miss us & I will not enjoy our holiday. Do you think it would upset her more if we spoke to her on the phone over load speaker of course? hehe

H, my name is Nancy (greys4u) and just got my gcc back in Sept. I am no stranger to a bird, I feed wild birds and I did Greyhound Rescue for many years. My fid is named Punkin and a Sun will be here by May, his name will be Ollie. I am retired so they will get lots of attention during the day. The dogs are doing okay with Punkin but when he screams, they just go in the other room !!! Punkin will be 1 yr old in May. No one ever told me how much you get attached to these little guys. He makes me smile whenever he's around and since I have had him, he does talk, not clearly but with his gravely voice. I come in the room , I say Hi and he says Hi, I ask a question and I can tell by the tone of his voice if its a yes or no. We have a lot of deer here and I took Punkin on my shoulder to see them. I pointed out how pretty they were. I asked if he thought so, he gave me a resounding NO and a scream right in my ear.

hello from Tassie

Hi Everyone,

well i am the proud owner of Monty he is a plue Indian Ringneck he was born on the 4th of september 2010 so still only a bub : )
he was hand reared from pretty much the day he hatched from what the breeder tells me he was housed in doors around dogs, cats and several other bird species so he is pretty socialized when it comes to house hold noise tv, vacume ect.
i am also waiting on the new arrival of a Green Cheek Conure still waiting on the DNA results for the sexes but fingers crossed for a little girl her name will be Ivy she is still being hand fed at the moment and wont be ready for me to collect until around the 18th of february cant wait already got her home set up toys ect very spoilt like Monty,
i'm hoping they will eventualy be at least friendly towards each other but not holding my breath for any miricals

Hello
I recently bought 2 young budgies:blue2::blue2: (8 weeks old now). I have many concerns regarding their health and training, as I am a new owner. I've read 8 budgie/parakeet books but am still concerned about the household chemicals that will damage them:confused:. Is there a hairspray/ hair product that is safe? What sort of cleaning materials are safe?:)

THANKS!

You are right to be concerned about the many toxins in our homes for birds. Many metals, some foods, most vapors, plug ins, candles, room sprays, yes the vapors from hair spray, some paints, teflon cookware and telfon in other appliances like hair dryers. some woods and plants. The list goes on and on. Talk about baby proofing a home bird proofing is a whole other task.

If I have to use hairspray I make sure to do it upstairs in the bedroom (their cages are downstairs). I shut the bedroom door, run a fan & open the window. I will poke around on line and see if I can find any bird friendly or organic makeup & hair products! Oh & ps. Welcome :D
