Hello guys,

I'm new here and i'm also new with all parrot stuff.

i really didn't find anything to help with my bird.

my bird is without tail, the seller said it will grow up in no time!!!!

I need help with couple of things:

- how to make him stop biting.
- how to make him stand on my hand.
- teaching him to speak.

and how can i know the age of my bird?

PLZ help me i'm new at this

Welcome to the forum. It would take a year or so with a good diet for the feathers to be replaced. Age? just a guess, i would say at least a year old due to the color of the eyes. Other than that i would need to have bird in hand and a lapriscopic exam.

For your other questions, I recommend you go through old threads here especially in the Amazon forum. Check stickies as well. You will find a lot of information. If you want more, Googling your questions will find some amazing articles about amazons, gaining your parrot's trust and other topics. Talking may come with time but it's no guarantee with any bird and will take a lot of repetitive talking to your bird. Think about how you would encourage an infant to speak.

Mainly, go at your bird's pace and give him time. If he is biting now he is not ready to step up yet and you don't want to ruin your potential relationship by forcing anything! Posting here was a great first step! Since you have no parrot experience, I highly recommend devoting a lot of time to researching the various parrot websites and blogs available as well as parrot forums, then if you have questions you still can't find answers to come back and we'll help!

He's really cute! Where did you get him from? Did they give you any information about him at all? I didn't notice a band on his leg, one on the side of the pic we can't see?

I'm curious. What did the guy who sold you the bird say happened to his tail?!

Amazons generally are not pluckers... and if they do pluck it's usually chest, not tails.

And the rest of his feathers look fine/not chewed.

So I'm guessing someone might have actually tried to grab this bird and pick him up by the tail?!

IN WHICH CASE YOU'RE LIKELY TO HAVE TRUST ISSUES UP THE YING-YANG! He won't be fond of hands after experiencing something like that...

So, first order of business if I am guessing correctly is to gain this bird's trust, and NO GRABBING!

My second guess is that he got into an argument with another bird - AND LOST! And lost his tail feathers in the process.

(Which ACTUALLY DOES sound like something a "hot 3" amazon might do. Territorial Disputes R Us!)

But if he's extremely hand shy?! I'm sticking with my first guess. (And I'm kinda mad...)

Read my post on amazon body language. Start there.

there is a band on his leg but i cant reach it.

but for the tail the man took the fathers of because they where missed up and he said it will grow in no time that's what made me think there is a problem.

There is no polite way to say this: HE WAS AN IDIOT!

YOUNG BIRDS ALWAYS MESS UP THEIR TAIL FEATHERS. THEY LOOK RATTY BECAUSE THESE BIRDS PLAY HARD. YOU DON'T PULL THEIR TAIL FEATHERS JUST BECAUSE THEY GET A LITTLE RATTY LOOKING...

If you damage the feather follicles, they don't grow back!!!

As an added bonus, it's very painful for the bird!!!

AGAIN, ANOTHER ADDED BONUS, IT MAKES THEM FEARFUL OF HUMANS!!!
"THOSE PEOPLE-LOOKING THINGS WILL GRAB YOU AND PULL OUT YOUR TAIL FEATHERS."

2015 suggests this is a very young bird, who apparently has ZERO training... and has been handled roughly, to say the least.

Assume he is not tame and start from square one. Basic step up, no biting.

Amazons will bounce back, but this guy didn't do you any favors.

The guy pulled his feathers out?! Oh my. Where did you find this guy? If I read your post correctly, I think there was something not right there! You will need to take things slow with him. He must be so afraid. The pictures look like he is out of his cage?

yeah i bought him a stand to let him feel like home, i even gave him my finger as a snack :p.

and i got my lesson very hardly.

as for the guy i felt his an idiot too, i told him i don't mind the feathers like this, it will be changed with time,,,, he said no worries it will grow fast and he pulled them just like that.

the guy said he will travel and he got no time for the bird so he decided to sell him.

i got him for 1000$

that's the reason i tried to search and find stuff,, and one of the bird fingers is cut of from the tip of the nail the whole nail has been taken.

i asked him about this too he said it will grow don't worry

i wish if i can take more photo of him but i'm afraid it will scare him more now.

i will wait for couple of days then i will try to show you guys everything so you can help me rais him

i really feel sorry for this bird

What an awful situation! If I understand correctly, the guy pulled the feathers while you watched? I would have had a hard time watching that and not giving him a piece of my mind! As for the nail, if the toe itself is cut and the cuticle is missing or damaged, you will only have a stump but if the nail is just cut extremely short it may grow back. It won't effect his perching either way, but if it looks like it's still healing make sure it is clean and not infected.

You're definitely on the right track and you did the right think getting the bird away from that guy! I feel confident you will provide him a loving home. :) If you want specific information on diet, building your bird's trust or anything like that just ask and plenty of members here will be able to give you some specific advice. Keep up the good work!

Thank you so much Mallory,

I was watching but i didn't knew what to do i told him it will heart him he said no its ok you will not see a blood or anything else, i told him what about the feeling he said its just a moment and the feather will grow n couple of months like new.

as for the nail, the nail is almost gone, just a small pace left and he said it will grow back.

Poor little guy. I'm glad you got him away from that owner. Some people should never own pets. I would like to find him and pluck every hair on his body. One by one, very slowly! :16::16:
I hope you do lots of research and give this little guy a great home.

I have owned Amy,my Blue Front, going on 29 years now. I got her when she was just 16 weeks old..Looking at the pics of your BF brings back wonderful thoughts of when I got her..She even looked "tiny" like yours does lol.

Amy is the only Amazon that I have had a lot of contact with. I have handled, been around Double Yellow Heads, and Red Lorded Amazons. My first meeting of a 'zon was with a friend who has a Blue Front, and I just fell in love with him. I think the BF's are the sweetest of all amazons < I might be bias tho lol

It is great you are taking the time and responsibility of this mistreated bird! Read up,ask us questions! No question is a stupid one here.

thank you so much guys i really appreciate what your doing for me :$

I have a huge problem now, every time i get near the bird he get scared and he shake a lot !!! what should i do for him?

Just take things slow. Sit by his cage and talk to him. He has to know he can trust you. I wish you all the best and Thank you for getting him out of the situation he was in.

Well like I said, this guy did you NO FAVORS! This bird is going to be hand shy, and is likely to be especially protective of his tail for the immediate future.

New person, new place, new rules. I don't do stuff like that bird, but I also don't allow biting.

The best way to get a bird over fear of hands?! When those hands have favorite treats in them, and they don't attempt to grab you... THE WAY TO A BIRD'S HEART IS THROUGH HIS STOMACH.

Sit and talk with the bird for a bit. Don't make threatening moves. THEN IGNORE JUST HIM. READ A BOOK OR SOMETHING NEXT TO THE CAGE. DO THINGS, PRETENDING HE DOESN'T EXIST, THAT GETS HIM CURIOUS... MAKES HIM WANT TO SEE WHAT YOU'VE GOT. PLAY WITH A TOY... THEN SET IT DOWN NEXT TO YOU... GO BACK TO READING YOUR BOOK. SEE IF HE COMES DOWN TO EXPLORE...

LET THE BIRD SEEK OUT YOUR ATTENTION...

THEN GIVE HIM WHAT HE SEEKS.

I was watching but i didn't knew what to do i told him it will heart him he said no its ok you will not see a blood or anything else, i told him what about the feeling he said its just a moment and the feather will grow n couple of months like new.

My first thought would be to slap the guy senseless... then take away what ever he was using to pull feathers.

Ummmm.... NO! You're not doing that to my bird... if I'm buying him.

You didn't know. Not your fault.

thank you so much birdman ...

the guy hold the bird between his hand and he was pulling the feathers with his mouth i swear to god i was @@.

i got goose bumps at that moment. but thank god now i got the bird away from him!!!

I hold him with a towel today and i tried to talk to him he tried to bite me first but after couple of tries to reach his head he let me scratch it for him for a while, i gave him couple of treats and put him back on the stand. after that he tried to make some noise and i ignored him, after couple of hours i did the same, he seems to like it now. but the biting is still on
