I have a green cheek conure , her name is Jolene.
Hi there, I've had my girl Jolene for about 2 months now and I keep reading posts about how teflon can kill birds. I am trying to find some cook wear that is safe for my girl. If anyone has some bird safe cook wear please let me know.
thank you

Sydney and Jolene :rainbow1:

I use stainless steel cookware. As far as I know thats okay lol! Well I hope!

Teflon can kill birds if you're not watching, what you're doing... It needs to get very hot (someone forgetting they turned it on), before it'll kill your birds...

Better safe than sorry! I'd get rid of the teflon altogether. One time of forgetting something on the stove, and your bird could be gone. D:

Stainless and cast iron stuff is fine. There is some non-stick that is safe for birds, but I would do more research before buying some.

I use stainless and it does clean up pretty easily. Usually if I just put some soapy water in it and soak it, that is enough to get out any stuck on mess. It's the only cookware I've ever had and it's held up for the last 25 years very well.

Welcome to you and your Conure Jolene! Stainless-steel cookware is safe, and isn't difficult to clean (I am a bachelor who hates scrubbing pots and pans :D). I also like old-fashioned cast-iron and enamelware; both are safe and last a long time.

Thank you everyone for your advice!
I also have another question, are candles and incense really bad?
Like can I have a candle in a room she's never in?
Or can I have a candle lit across the room from her?
Thank you :)

I've read that SOME candles are safe but it scares me too much to chance it. With it being winter, our power goes out very easily and the electric company doesn't make haste in restoring our power since there aren't many houses on our road. One of the first times it happened we weren't very prepared and didn't have any working flashlights. We had no other choice than to light two candles, unscented of course. I made sure that they were only lit in the living room and that all the doors between there and our birds were closed(you have to walk through our studio to get back to the two rooms where are birds are so they weren't really in any kind of proximity to the candles) and we didn't have a problem, but outside of an emergency situation, I won't light any. And I am a HUGE fan of scented candles an incense, but I guess that's just one of the sacrifices we have to make for our fids. I just went and picked up some of my belongings out of storage and in the one box was probably 100 sticks of incense, I was like, oh yea, my incense I'll never be able to burn :09:

As for cookware, like everyone else said, stainless or cast iron are the way to go. Right now we have all stainless and one cast iron pan, we were actually just at the store looking at new pans and I got soooo frustrated when I saw that 90% of their stock seemed to have "non-stick" in huge letters on the box  Fortunately they had a few stainless ones but I got so frustrated by already having to buy a new heater that I didn't even feel like deciding on pans after I spent half the day researching electric heaters trying to find out what brands don't use teflon. :22:

We had just got a brand new set of nonstick cookware about the time we got our bird.We didn't want to ever take the chance of hurting her so we got stainless steel and have had no issues.

I just recently replaced all my nonstick with stainless steel in prep for my Parrot.

My candles and incense are harder for us to give up by far because they are a religious use item in addition to just liking them. I have decided to just replace all my candles with non scented beeswax ones and only burn them in another room. Then incense I plan to use outside like on the deck when she is inside safe from the fumes.

I also read some potpourri is ok but I have been unable to find it without the essential oils added so I am planning on like orange peels, apple slices or cinnamon sticks and stuff.

@mnkeastman, that's actually the main reason I used to use candles and incense as well, I'm not sure what your practice is, but I have found that using candles without lighting them isn't as nice, but it's the thought that counts, until it's warm enough to take our religious festivities outside, we're just using our imaginations :)

Same here :) And I know exactly what you mean! Speaking of incense, it just reminded me that I was wondering the other day about oil burners(just essential oils, either electric or a possible bird safe tealight) or candle warmers? Are either of them safe? I assume a candle warmer would be the same as lighting the candle except that there wouldn't be any carbon monoxide, but that there can still be other harmful things released?
I can't really think of anything dangerous about oils though, they are all natural, as long as you make sure the heating element is teflon/ptfe free then it should be safe, right?

I honestly have no idea it was my understanding the essential oils on the incense and in the candles being let into the air was the problem but if I am mistaken I would really be happy.

Do you smudge? I usually use a sage smudge stick about once a week in the house but I figured that would be ok cause its just the leaves or whatever burning.

I am sure there are others here that enjoy using the scents in their home that might have an idea of what to use.

If that's the case than I'm way off base! I hope someone knows, maybe that would be a good question for me to ask the vet...

I've been saying since we moved into the house that I've wanted to do a complete cleansing, which obviously requires burning some sage, pretty much everywhere. The previous people that lived here apparently got into a little trouble and had the drug task force literally ram the front door in(still has the dents to prove it, kind of makes for a funny story lol), and the entire house was raided! Kind of makes me feel weird lol. I've probably mentioned three times in the past 2 weeks about wanting to get some sage but I wasn't sure if it would affect the birds in any way. I'm so afraid to light anything on fire in the house, except for the woodstove, but that's on the second floor, above the birds, and I've literally never smelled it down here so that doesn't really count in my book. If you've been doing it on a weekly basis and it hasn't affected your birds at all, maybe I'm worrying too much.

I don't have my bird yet though so I don't know. I plan on asking her vet when she gets here about all of that stuff if I can't find it out beforehand. Still waiting for her to be ready, hopefully by the end of the month. For right now I just have my dog and cats that look at me like a crazy lady when I do it.

Sorry, I knew that! I saw the pictures of your cute little baby Pi! Talk about a brainfart, it's been a long night, not only ran out of my sleeping pills but for some stupid reason, finished off an energy drink at 2am...wasn't thinking lol.

Hi Sydney. I'm also new and boy am I glad you asked about cookware. I was also wondering about that. I look forward to seeing the answer about candles. I am so paranoid that if I am cleaning, I close Lulu up in a room so that the fumes don't get to her.
