New cage for Gloria.

Gloria's new cage arrived two days ago. Needless to say, she's not the least bit interested in it. I put it door to door to her old cage yesterday with a rope perch going between them. I also hung her beloved corn skewer in the new cage. She didn't go near it. Any ideas of how to entice her into the new cage? I realize this may take awhile but she does need to be living in it by the first week in July! Her 30 year old cage is really too small for her. She still doesn't get on my hand. If she did, I'd at least let her try out the play top.

It took Zilla about 2 weeks to finally spend the first night in the scary big new cage when I first bought it for her. I tried putting her favorite toys & treats. I would even physically put her in it on one of her favorite perches and leave her there to figure out how to get out on her own (which she would do as quickly as possible.) I put some toys and favorite foods on top of it and she would climb up there and eat & play.

Each day I would take something out of the old cage and put it in the new cage. Finally there was only 1 perch, no toys and 1 water dish 1 food dish in the old cage and all the "good" stuff was in the new cage. I started only serving the "yummy" food in the new cage and making her go in the new cage to get her favorite treats. I never closed the door on her, and then one day she spent almost all day playing inside the new cage and when it was time for her to put herself to bed she stayed in the new cage.

She never went back in the old cage after that, so I got rid of it a few days later.

I'll work on that. I put the corn skewer in the new cage yesterday. Tomorrow it will be her seed/pellet dish which is her favorite. She doesn't really play with toys. She's not a real active bird. Have her cages door to door with bungee cords holding them together. I'm not sure about doing that when I go back to work next week (I'm on spring break) as I don't know if the cats could get them apart. I mainly worry about one of the cats, though with the two cages together, she pretty much ignore's Gloria--probably because she seems so far away. When school's out though, we can go back to this duplex arrangement.

I got new perches for the new cage as I intend to move her old cage upstairs. I spend a fair amount of time in the sewing room and I wanted to put it in there so she can hang out with me up there. Of course she has to get on my hand or a stick first!

Well we are making progress! I put Gloria's seed/pellet dish in the new cage and she still didn't go in there so then I put it on the floor of the cage where she could really see it. This was a couple of hours after feeding time that I moved it. She made a beeline for the new cage, stood on the door frame and pulled the dish to her. Then I guess she just got curious and climbed up on one of the perches. She's explored two of them and one of the foraging toys. She looks like she's ready for a nap. We'll keep the duplex arrangement for a while but it will be interesting to see where she chooses to sleep. I'll have to pull the cages apart to cover whichever one she chooses!

Glad to hear Gloria is exploring the new cage! Very nice progress! Gloria is such a beautiful bird.

I'm really proud of her. She's showing no interest in going back in the old cage. Every time she climbs down to the floor of the cage, I think she's going back into the old cage, but she doesn't! She's been very quiet though--sort of like when she first came to us!
