Well I acquired a new bird in a very odd way last night. My wife was leaving for work, she works nights, and she was pointing at my car in the driveway, now I thought she was asking if she had enough room backing out as she left.. I looked over at my car and say there was a bird on my hood... as I looked closer I saw it was parrot like... moving closer he started to do the head bob dance... cautiously i extended my finger to him half expecting to lose a small chunk, lol, but he thankfully climbed on!!!.. the look on my wife's face was priceless... " oh crap we have a bird now" lol. So we got him in a box and covered it with a sheet, put him in one of the extra bedrooms and made it dark. I went out to Pets Mart and got all I needed for him... soooo.. I now have a Green Cheek Conure!!! I have had birds before but not for like 20 years lol. He is extremely tame and so far pretty quiet. I will take him out when I get home from work and socialize with him.

His name is Lucky, cause he is lucky my wife and I found him, lol... My name is John

I'd put up a card at the PetSmart seeing if someone lost the bird (also talk to the local avian vet in the area). A bird that steps up on his own, is likely someone's long time pet.

yea I thought the same just wasn't sure on how to go about that... I mean I have no idea how far he may have flown lol

Hi, he is most likely right from the neighborhood! He would not of made it very long on his own! Right now, there is most likely someone out there that is heartbroken and terrified for their lost baby!

Please check Parrot 911 and Craig's list before keeping the bird.

It's one thing if no one claims it.

It's something else entirely to NOT CHECK to see if someone in the area is missing their bird.

I LOST MY GREENWING ONE YEAR AGO. That bird had been my constant companion for 17 years. Someone called the vet, said they found a big red bird in their yard. The vet had my lost bird flyer...

They hung up without taking my information, or leaving theirs.

THAT BIRD WAS MY BABY!!!

Also maybe put up "found" signs around your neighborhood. I'd want my baby back if she got out by accident.

I'm in agreement with Birdman here, don't just keep the bird without reaching out to the community first to find its owners! Obviously it is missing from somewhere, probably somewhere CLOSE to you. Please don't just assume you can keep the bird! You can easily make and post flyers around the neighborhood, post on Facebook about where you found it, etc.

Try everything you can before just keeping it. Someone is missing their bird, probably very upset right now their baby is lost and would love to be reunited!

I would take in a lost parrot no question but I would also check craigslist, any facebook community page, newspaper, pet stores, vets, community boards, etc. I would bet someone is looking for him :(

Welcome to the forums, John. Lucky is indeed fortunate to have found an understanding human. As others have posted, the flip-side is there may be a family in agony with worry over their lost bird. Once bonded, we view our parrots as innocent children and would deeply appreciate having our lost bird returned. Enjoy Lucky, but please consider making efforts to reach out. If no takers, you'll have a wonderful companion!
