crimson Rosella (Orange but juvenile)
hi, I am a complete bird newbie and want to know a lot more, hence joining this forum.
So a bit about our bird and how we came to get her.
I am an avid aquarium keeper and when a new exorics shop opened in our town I couldnt help but go in. My son was with me and he was drawn to the bird section, and to one particular bird. He told me there and then that he wanted the bird. I said no. He spent about an hour and a half whistling with the bird which went berserk when he left the room and started chirping when he returns entered. I still said no telling him he wouldn't look after it, and we left.
The next day I got up and my son wasn't in the house. I asked my daughter where he was and sh said he'd gone out muttering something about a parrot. I drove the mile to the shop and he was there. I asked the shop keeper how long he'd been there and he said he was waiting for the shop to open at 8 it was now 9.30. He'd cleaned out all the birds, fed and watered them and swept the floor. He did this everyday. I asked him why he was doing it and he said "so I can prove I can look after a bird and you'll let me have one". This carried on forvtwo weeks with him looking on the Internet on foods, habits, likes etc until I finally gave in and bought him the bird and cage on Christmas Eve but not before doing a lot of research so we could look after her properly and so we knew what to expect.
So now you know how our bird has come into our family but there are a few questions I have.
Our rosella is pictured on my profile picture, she is very young and her breast colour is a dark peach so can anyone tell me what this type of rosella this is and, I know they like fresh fruits but are there any which I shouldn't give her as the "don'ts" advice are very thin on the ground.
I have placed the picture in a reply to this thread below.

I'm am keen to know about what foods to avoid. I'm thinking fruits like grapes, kiwi fruit etc. I am just trying to vary her diet to keep her interested.

Ps my new fish tank had to take a back shelf to have room for her cage.

Welcome to the forum. I can't see the picture.

Welcome! And same...ish? I see your profile picture on your profile but not next to your name on this thread. Odd. The picture I did see is personally too small to tell anything from.

Sorry, here's the picture

That's one of those birds I really never worked with, and honestly know nothing about.

In terms of feeding, the bird safe foods, and toys, and things to be avoided are posted on this site, number one on the NO NO list is avocado...

I believe a lot of what you are looking for is sticky-ed in the general parrot question section.

Anything TEFLON coated, if it gets too hot, WILL kill your bird.

I am not positive but I believe that you have a juvenile Crimson Rosella. This species will change color probably after it goes through puberty at about 18 months to two years of age. There is a striking differenc in the color of the juvenile and an adult.

BEWolf thanks mate, I know she's still young because she is still a tiny bit downy in places and looks like she's been in the wars.

Beautiful bird! Congrats on your new addition.
How old is your son, and what's the birdie's name??

Hmmm it sort of looks like a yellow rosella, but still a little different. It might be a cross, didn't the pet shop owner know?
Congrats on your new family member though, beautiful bird! Have you named him/her yet?! :)

He is nine, 10 this month and he named her nebula. Because he says her colours look like the ones in the Eagle nebula, (astronomy thing).

The pet store should have given you a certificate of health along with your receipt and something like a hatch certificate telling you when the bird was hatched. If they did not supply any of these things they should still be able to tell you her hatch date. You can also check for a band on her leg, which should have a loose fit on her leg, on the band, if there is one look for a two digit number that is turned sideways from any other numbers or letters and that is the year of birth.

Depending on the birds age and other factors the look of the feathers could be the result of a juvenile molt, but without a good picture to examine I could not say for certain.

It is really hard to identify which species od rosella that you have because of the striking difference in color between the juvenile and the adult of the species and then there is also the possibility that it is either a hybrid or just a color mutation. The pet shop where you got her should be able to tell you all of this information, they will probably have to look it up if this information is not included in any paper work that you got from them when you bought her. For that reason I would bring your receipt and other paper work with you when you ask them.

On another note what are you currently feeding Nebula and when are you feeding her this food?

Love the name! :)
How's she settling in in her new home?

A quick search on Google images led me to the crimson rosella, which looks a lot like your bird (see image below). The specific mutation is called cinnamon orange. So, you have a cinnamon orange crimson rosella! Have a look at this site for more info on rosellas Rosellas

I love your son's determination. He worked hard for his baby. Congrats to both of you!
As far as fruits go...apple is fine apart from the apple seeds, take those out before giving it to him. Coffee, chocolate, raw potatoes and onion all not good. And give as little as possible sunflower seeds. If unsure about anything, a quick Google seach will help a lot. I can not tell you how many times I have stood in the store, looking at some fruit or veg and Googled stuff like "parrot spinach eat". A large variety is always a good thing, but rather safe than sorry.

He's 10 and he named her "Nebula". He's also into astronomy and says her colours are just like the ones in the eagle nebula.
