Parrots
blue head amazon
Hello all I have a 2 year old amazon names Oscar that we have had for 4 days .
He loves children and talks to my son all the time as soon as he walks in the room starts to say all sorts of words . We have not had him on our hands yet as he acts scared but is happy for us to stand right next to him and talk and takes monkey nuts ant fruit from out hands .
We let him out of his cage each day for as long as we can that's has been about 6 hours and he sits on his cage cheating away .
Only thing that's been a shock is the screams in the morning :11:He is very vocal early

Welcome to our forum and the wonderful vocals of Amazon's
They are generally loud birds.
Perhaps a few Amazon guardian, will give you a few tips, pertaining to the screaming

Welcome to the Forum, and to the World of Zons:)

Yes, Amazons can be very loud, especially in the Mornings and early Evening!.. Unfortunately, this is something that they do.. I have learnt to live with it now:)

We would love to see a pic!

Many thanks for the welcome :) Oscar is not to loud at all and next doors grey can be heard over him still  I will try to put some pics up I think he is a bha , he is very bright I have lost count of the words he can say and his copy cat skills are awesome , I'm looking forward to gaining his trust so I can change all his old dirty toys and change him to the huge cage on order he has a full box of new toys but he didn't like the change when I put one on the outside of his cage now .

Can anyone tell me how to add a pic from an I pad ?

Can you load the pics onto your Computer from you Ipad?

I'm not to sure ill get on my laptop later and upload some pics of him . Hopefully he won't mind the camera .

Great.. Look forward to seeing them:) Here is how to upload your pics...

When you are creating your post, go into attachments, click on upload from Computer, then browse.. click on the pic you want to show, then click on upload.... or if you have photobucket just hover mouse over the image then left click on IMG and it will say copied, then just paste into your message box, go onto preview post and it will show if it has gone in properly:)

I guess we're just lucky, our 2 Zon's are pretty darn quiet most of the time, they only get loud when we bring them into the office

Congrats on the new family member!!

Welcome to the forum! Our amazon is really quiet almost all of the time. I guess we lucked out too. Ours was very slow to trust us, but now she totally does. You will love having an amazon. They are great.

I love to hear my Zon boys in the morning, (no screaming) they sit there and very quietly say "Hello, hello baby. Hello Shiloh, Hello Halo". Just too darn cute, just melts my heart :)

this is my boy :D
need some info on how to get his trust  im sure after the atempt to give him a new toy ending in a nip and after this he is not to happy for me to stand next to him to close i dont have a clue how to start this friendship off .not up for 50 pluss years of a me loving and him hating haha .

Take it easy and just talk to him at first. It tends to work best with amazons if you play a little hard to get. Being pushy to get their affection tends to be a turn off for them. It was a few weeks before I could pet my older amazon hen that I rehomed. Ask first before trying to pet him. If he ignores you, growls or turns his back its a no. Its okay for them to say no and you need to respect that. It generally means try again later. Keep doing things like putting a toy on top of his cage or a treat in his food bowl whenever you walk by to talk to him. Try not to shove things in his face if he responds by growling. Sometimes you might want to give him a toy and he might need to think about it a little while before deciding to take it. Just leave it in the cage a few inches away from him where he can go to it if he wants to. If he does ever let you pet him or step up for you, don't get greedy and push for more. Praise him, give him a treat if he'll take and put him down or end the interaction before he has a chance to get insecure and try to bite.
They screaming in the morning is normal. Almost all of them like to be as obnoxious as possible for 30 minutes or so in the morning and then again at night. Orange wings are well known for having a piercing scream.

That is adorable. Oscar looks healthy and happy. Parrots are so pretty..:D I noticed your parrot seems to be getting clogged sinus problem- maybe a cold.. Parrots can't stand drafts or to cool of a room. Might keep the air conditioner on around 75 degrees, make sure air isn't blowing on him directly, and check on him every so often. If he ruffles his feathers and stays that way, you might have a VET check him out. My parrots nostrils are clear which is a sign of a healthy parrot. Your parrot has clogged nostrils which could be a sign of catching a cold..

Oscar is soooooo beautiful! Melissasparrots gave you great advice. You have to be very patient with them while earning their trust. Follow his body language and he will let you know how fast to go. As I stated earlier, it took a long time for us to earn Casey's ( our blue fronted amazon) trust. She was scared to death of hands in the beginning. We just had to be patient with her. We gave her lots of treats and lots of attention. Now you would not think she is the same bird. It is very rewarding to see the change happen, it is well worth the wait. For us it took almost a year so don't give up if it takes a while.

Hi many thanks how do you tell ? This is my first bird appat from my chickens I keep ? I have moved him away from the window as he was happily looking out at the garden and my hens there is no way I'll get him in a carrier to visit a vet :31: there is a lady who takes in unwanted macaws down the road and she has been so good I may ask her to come round and have a look if he is bad ask her to put him in a carrier to get him to the vets heh as sneezed a little but done this from when he arrived here so didn't think to much of it

Hey, OWAs have their very own jungle scream,LOL. I have about 6 of them and don't hardly notice it any more. But it's different sound that any other zon makes. I see you've meet Melissa, she gives great advice, can't go wrong with her. Anyway welcome to the forum, read some of the older threads here in this section and ask question if you need help.

Ty lol so he is an orange winged amazon ! How silly do I feel thanks for all the advice I think talking and treats are the way forward for now , I'm a little worked about the sinus problem now though

keep the air conditioner on around 75 degrees

I would NOT want to see my electric bill if I did that!!! LOL Ours stays on 78 during the hot months (which is most of the time)

Melissa's advice is pretty good & I'd follow it, our Zons are quite different than our other birds socializing wise.

Luckily, ours aren't "screamers" (yet)

Good luck!!!
